Welcome back, Agatha Harkness.
Nearly three years after WandaVision concluded on Disney+, the Marvel Studios series will release in Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD formats on Tuesday, Nov. 28 — and it will offer a first look at WandaVision‘s forthcoming Agatha-centric spinoff, as seen in our exclusive clip from the physical release’s bonus features.
During WandaVision‘s series finale, Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) failed to absorb Wanda’s (Elizabeth Olsen) magic in their final battle, and Wanda ultimately trapped Agatha in her nosy neighbor “Agnes” persona. Since then, plot details about Agatha’s spinoff — now titled Agatha: Darkhold Diaries — have been scarce, but the behind-the-scenes footage above offers some small indications as to where we’ll pick up with Agatha when the show premieres.
In addition to Hahn (wearing various Agatha costumes we’ve never seen before!), the new footage also gives us a glimpse at ensemble members Joe Locke, Patti LuPone, Ali Ahn, Sasheer Zamata and Debra Jo Rupp (who previously appeared in WandaVision).
“The character is so deep and heartfelt and dangerous,” co-executive producer Mary Livanos says in the featurette. “Continuing the story of Agatha and getting to know her more was immediately an imperative for us as creatives.”
It will still be a while before Darkhold Diaries hits our screens, though: The spinoff, originally slated for a late 2023 debut, has since been delayed until early fall 2024. But in the meantime, WandaVision: The Complete Series Collector’s Edition — featuring Steelbook packaging and two discs per product — will be available via Blu-ray and 4K UHD tomorrow. Additional bonus features include a gag reel, deleted scenes and the WandaVision installment of Disney+ docuseries Marvel Studios: Assembled.
I hope so much they’ll fast track this, it’s the only MCU project I’m actually looking forward
WandaVision was such a delight. Hopefully they nail this one too.
I am hopeful but cautious. WandaVision was amazing but Marvel has been in a more-miss-than-hit slump for a while, with the extra burden of the Disney+ series getting a fair amount of the blame. Hopefully Agatha can survive the translation from a supporting character/antagonist to a lead–it can happen but it’s rare. Also the halt in the production of the show (like they’ve also done with Daredevil: Born Again) and the shifting names aren’t good signs. I really want Kathryn Hahn to have a good story to show off her amazing talent, and also want Joe Locke to have a nice meaty (evil?) part in something else besides Heartstopper that gives him a chance to show some range.
Rebecca missed a chance to start her article off with “Hello, Harkness, my old friend.”
