Kinect cruises past 10m sales barrier

Microsoft announces milestone

Microsoft has announced that sales of Kinect have now surpassed the 10 million mark worldwide.

The platform holder has also confirmed that more than 10 million standalone Kinect games have also been sold across the globe.

Meanwhile, Guinness World Records has officially named Kinect the fastest selling consumer electronics device. The peripheral sold an average of 133,333 units per day - a total of 8 million units - in its first 60 days on shelves, between 4 November 2010 and 3 January 2011.

"The sales figures here speak for themselves," said Gaz Deaves, gaming editor for Guinness World Records.

"According to independent research, no other consumer electronics device sold faster within a 60-day time span, which is an incredible achievement considering the strength of the sector."

And by sold we all know they mean shipped.

That's pretty good.
TheMopFromMars on 9 Mar '11
Hats off , marketing was spot on , cant take that away from them.
martinawatson on 9 Mar '11
Nah Bryan, pretty sure they mean sold. They tend to differetiate the two. Kinect is doing well. Like it or not, own it or not, it's done well for itself.
Imaduck on 9 Mar '11
Meanwhile, the games pass through an invisibliser.
boskersrevenge on 9 Mar '11
Much like the 3DS has a built-in rehasher? :P

Well 90% of the gaming comunity was proved wrong however i don't think they've pushed profit yet though not by a long shot if marketing itself was 100's millions

@imaduck

Its shipped according to IGN.

http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/115/1154530p1.html

They can sell as many as they want but I aint buying one until there are games that I'd like to play.
Bryanee1983 on 9 Mar '11
Just shows what can be achieved with a bit of exaggeration marketing

MS 's next move - selling sand to the arabs?

Expensive paperweights imho, because it 's highly unlikely anything that requires any skill whatsoever, can ever be made compatible with this Kinect court jester kit.
Beebop10 on 9 Mar '11
Whatever the case is Bryan, I wouldn't rely on IGN for anything
It's doing well, that'll do. And ye, I'm with you. Release 1 really seriously appealling game and show more to come and you've got me, until then, I'll pass.
Imaduck on 9 Mar '11
PS3 fanboys read this "Guinness World Records has officially named Kinect the fastest selling consumer electronics device",

NOOOOOOO whaaaaaa not true I wuv my PS3 it's better. Blah blah shipped not sales

Buries head in sand.

I don't even care about the Kinect but I laugh my head off when the fanboys deny reality.

Disagree, not a fanboy, its naff because it is limited, pricey and hasn't got any games

Now, typing this whilst watching the Spurs match, COME ON MILAN!!! Football will be the winner if Spuds go out

I actually think eventually , there will uses for kinnect that will add to experiences in core games, but at moment it's a complete waste of time for core gamers ( whatever they are).
It's not advanced enough or suitable enough for most core games to use as primary controller, and games like gears kinnect aren't deep enough to appeal to me, so until the time when it starts really adding sufficient improvements to gameplay, I'm not going to bother. When it drops to sub 50 and adds to gameplay , I'll look into it, but right now I reckon there's going to be lot of kinnects taken the place of wii's under casual gamers tv's and never really used. ( met someone other day whose wife convinced him to buy one for a keep fit game , which consequently never used)

True and hes probably referring to me and doesnt know the 360 is my platform of choice and even then I enjoy games on all systems and own the current big three.

@Imaduck

The problem I have is that I cant for the life of me think of a game they could make that I'd enjoy with Kinect but then again thats why I'm not a game dev.
Bryanee1983 on 9 Mar '11
all this shipped and sales nonsense of course there are high sales for them to be shipping out that many units and when they've shipped out the 11th or 12th million unit the sales would have passed 10 million easy

What a bell end lol

There's been stupendous amounts of nintendogs sold( 22 mil as of 31st march 2009), but does that mean it's any good ??? Just cause something sells a lot, doesn't mean it's actually good, just means people were gullible enough to buy into the hype.
kirankara on 9 Mar '11
Well I have to hold my hand up and be the first to admit that when I first heard about Project Natal (Or Kinect as we now know it) I scoffed and ranted that it is a glorified Eyetoy and it will be a huge flop and with be in the bargain bins within weeks of release. While I still think it is a glorified Eyetoy, i have to take my hat of to MS and eat a huge slice of humble pie... Those are very impressive numbers considering its a add on that costs as much as a Wii, well done!

I kinda think you missed my point there kirankara, I was being childish in my first post in a sarcastic way, sorry if some people can't realize this.

I personally think that Kinect is a pile of s**te, but there is no denying that it has been a massive success, I just can't believe the amount of people that will look for any excuse to make sound like it's been a flop, when clearly it hasn't. Why the hate. Don't like it don't buy it. It's to those childish people I was speaking to, so put your nintendogs stats away and get off your high horse (Bell end indeed!)
McShave 07 on 9 Mar '11
These are difinately impressive figures. The only problem is that it reportedly cost $1,000,000,000 to develop and $500,000,000 has been spent on marketing. An average of one game sold per Kinect is not going to make up that difference.
KippDynamite on 9 Mar '11

Lol fair enough, I did indeed miss ur intonation in ur post, but this is one of the downsides of online communication I guess, either that or u need to work on ur mocking of fan boys, as it's too subtle. I'm not only one who missed it.

I do think those stats are impressive stats for sales, and I wouldn't personally go far as calling it a heap of s**t, but do think it's got a long, long way to go to prove it's value to " core gamers". However the more it sells the more the price drops, and if they find some good ways of implementing it's use, I'll then buy one.( either that or I'll buy it cheap just for using as a high tech gadget)

Anyway I agree with ur point, fan boys can be total bell ends

Ps ur still a bell end lol
Just kidding mate
kirankara on 10 Mar '11
Only thing i can see kinnect doing in hardcore games is handjestures and voice commands, but that's nothing innovative.
shogunreaper on 10 Mar '11
I think it would have sold a heap more if they had of actually released that Milo game by now.
Still not sure what the deal is with that one. Recently we were told it was scrapped, then its back on.
Just hope we don't have to wait until e3 to see something to get exited about.

You can bury your head in the sand as much as you want, it still doesn't detract from your baiting of the PS3 community in an Xbox related article, oh, and the fact you have just received your first warning.

People, just quit with the immature comments that are directly targeting an angry response.

@ 360_Fan: Befriending a small boy and being let into his mind? *shudders*

As for the technical side of things, I have seen nothing on what made that so special seeing as it was staged. The first "interactive" showing when it was still Natal with Kate and Milo was nothing more than someone acting with a pre rendered movie simulating an interactive game and the second showing was nothing more than a few motion control games interspersed with a young boy getting progressively sadder.

Am I the only one who saw that? Ideas for that kind of interactivity are not commercially available yet and certainly not possible with Kinect.

The problem I have is that I cant for the life of me think of a game they could make that I'd enjoy with Kinect but then again thats why I'm not a game dev.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a game I think could translate very well. Shame it'll never happen :(
