Hackers take down website of bank that froze WikiLeaks funds

By Daniel Tencer
Monday, December 6th, 2010 -- 8:32 pm

wikileaks1 Hackers take down website of bank that froze WikiLeaks fundsA group of Internet activists calling themselves Operation Payback have taken credit for shutting down the website of a bank that earlier Monday froze funds belonging to WikiLeaks.

Announcing its successful hack on a Twitter account, the group declared, "We will fire at anyone that tries to censor WikiLeaks."

Earlier in the day, Swiss bank PostFinance issued a statement announcing that it had frozen 31,000 euro ($41,000 US) in an account set up as a legal defense fund for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

The bank said it had frozen the account because, in opening it, Assange had claimed residency in Geneva.

"Assange cannot provide proof of residence in Switzerland and thus does not meet the criteria for a customer relationship with PostFinance," the bank said.

As of Monday evening, the PostFinance website was unavailable.

Operation Payback also promised a hack attack on PayPal, the online payment service that last week cut off WikiLeaks, denying the group a major tool for collecting donations from supporters.

With the financial noose tightening around WikiLeaks even as a legal one tightens around its founder's neck, Operation Payback has effectively declared war on the organizations working to hobble WikiLeaks.

"In these modern times, Internet access is fast becoming a basic human right," the group says in a video posted to YouTube. "Just like any other basic human right, we believe it is wrong to infringe upon it."

The video continues: "To move to censor content on the Internet based on your own prejudice is, at best, laughably impossible. The unjust restrictions you impose on us will meet with disaster, and only strengthen our resolve to disobey and rebel against your tyranny."

WikiLeaks has in recent days been under a deluge of cyber-attacks that led to its DNS registration for its .org URL being taken down, but by mid-Monday the site had reappeared on more than 500 different domains.

News sources in Britain reported late Monday that Assange has arranged to meet with British police on Tuesday, and will likely face a court hearing over an international warrant issued by Sweden in connection with accusations of sexual assault. The criminal probe does not allege non-consensual sex, only that Assange had sex with two women without a condom.

Supporters of the secret-spilling organization argue that the controversies surrounding WikiLeaks -- from the unusual criminal probe against Assange, to banks freezing their funds -- are part of a global campaign to shut down a website that has embarrassed world leaders on numerous occasions.

YEAH! THAT’LL SHOW THAT BANK! WHAT IS THE BANK WITHOUT IT’S WEBSITE?! NOTHING! Oh wait…that’s Assage. A bank is still a bank but an internet troll is just a sad loser that no one will listen to. Congrats though hackers, you succeeded in annoying a major business….a little bit and getting that all the way to the front page of…Rawstory.com. SHOT HEARD ROUND THE…World?

Good! Give ‘em a taste of their own medicine for once.

Not that I’m a fan of banks, but going after the service providers is the wrong target.

Joe Lieberman and other elements of the government are the enemy in this case, not Amazon or PayPal or somebody else.

    Bad move IMO.

  5. Anonymous

Also, the so called caped crusaders that took down the big bad bank are just a bunch of assholes from 4chan with nothing better to do. They don’t give a shit about your phony “cause”, they just enjoy being assholes. You’re in the same company of a bunch of people who email dead pictures of car crash victims to their families while their mourning and do prank phone call raids (cause they’re edgy as fuck, that’s why). You’re in good company Wikileaks.

I almost want to get up and cheer. I mean who’s not rooting for a nice bank asswhooping.

And tagging internet access and the connection to the global consciousness, basic human rights.
I know professional screen writers who can’t pull slick like that out of their massive paychecks.

I mean I almost want to get out from behind my pale gray desk and knock over my gray cup of government issue coffee, knock off these tired corporate shoes and dance my way into a better life. Queue the fricken music and the dancing girls.

Yeah I am going to hold onto that cheer and hope and ignore the fact I have no clue who they are, what they really want or if this is even real. You know real like my third party actually all being republicans anyway.

Geeks are pretty fricken sexy though.

Am I the only guy out here with no clue which bus is going to the Jersey Shore here?

  12. Anonymous

Wrong! The banks and other multinational corporations are running the show. Lieberman and his ilk are puppets – well-paid and aware puppets, but not the ones pulling the strings.

  13. Anonymous

A bank’s website is far more than just its image to the world. It’s tied in to the bank’s inner workings. The fact is that you don’t know what the damage actually is.

  14. Anonymous

You know, everything was fine with wikileaks, all the governments were like, isn’t he cute with his whistle-blower site, he dumped thousands of leaks on Iraq and that was ok, no threat to secuirty, he released thousands of leaks on the state department and that was ok too, no threat to security, but the second he threatens to dump secrets about A BANK, well that man as to be stopped, he’s a terrorist, he’s a threat to our national security?

  15. That’s part of the pressure. The customers NEED to be made to feel the pain too!

To smear and try to close your wallet is nothing new for these scum who think that they can do whatever they want . from starting illegal wars for oil profits to carrying out 9/11 we are dealing with murderers and maniacs, the sickest people on earth who think that with their money and power they can get away with anything.—Their right. except that welkileaks has other plans for these slime. That’s what they are . Wearing suits and ties and underneath they are vile scum. It’s not only limited to the men either.Whore’s that sellout for a buck.I never thought america , the country we love ,has a scum , corrupt government ruling in our name.

  17. There is no reasonable way to target those of which you speak. But banks and PayPal are easy to find and interrupt. These guys have struck a bigger blow for freedom than all the posturing politicians and legal organizations combined. I only wish I had the skills to help them out.

  18. Anonymous

Exactly. It is now for the world to see how a whistle blower turns terrorist. Threaten the banks, and their profits. Then the authorities come after you.

  19. Oh, so you know these people personally? Just because you have an idea as to who or what these people may be outside of this event, doesn’t mean you are right. Somehow I think perhaps you are the asshole.

  20. OMG, I got a belly laugh from this.

    Well DONE Operation Payback!!!!

  21. Please, I always knew it. That’s why I left.

So suddenly, the cesspool of the internet just turned on it’s heels and decided to be for some kind of deluded common good? You, good sir, are naive. I 100% guarantee that they give just as much consideration to this as they do everything else. It’s the hot button of the week and they love to press it. If you knew anything about them you wouldn’t even attempt to argue on their behalf.

  23. Anonymous

    good for them…

  24. Anonymous

No it’s not, it’s a consumer website. The damage is absolutely nil. I deal with repairing hacked systems all the time. These are low level mosquito hackers that did nothing but overloaded the system with DNS attacks. it’s not their first time, it’s not their last time. They did the same thing to Verizon a while back and nothing was hurt.

  25. Anonymous

    nice job.

  26. Anonymous

    yeah…sound logic there, Manny.

You guys sound so much like republicans, it’s not even funny anymore.
The same bullshit they were spouting about having the right to information that wasn’t theirs, and this either with us or against us mentality is the same shit just a different color. The saddest part is you guys are too far up on your moral high horses to see that you’re becoming the thing you hate and you’re so far deep in denial about it that you won’t even admit it.

To sum it up. Pot meet Kettle, he lives in Dallas Texas now with Laura.

    http://www.privacy-resources.edu.tc

  37. Exactly. Tells us all we need to know about where their true priorities and allegiance lies. They can go on about “protecting the homeland” all they want, and play all their games of cops and robbers with full body scanners and armed cops at the trainstation. But that’s all for show — they don’t really give a shit about our safety. They only care about their safety. And the safety of their money and their ability to make more money off the backs of the rest of us.

I hope Assange kicks them in the balls something good, and I hope he lives to appreciate just how grateful we are that he showed the courage to do so.

  38. Nonsense. Commercial players like Amazon, Mastercard and Paypal were so quick to cave when Joe Lieberman and his goons told them to do the government’s bidding. They didn’t hesitate to drop a perfectly legitimate customer just because someone told them to do so. That’s their choice — if they think kind of behavior will get them business, then, sure, they can do it. But they should be made to realize that there’s a price to pay — and if a few days’ down time ends up costing them some customers who prefer to do business with a reliable bank that treats every customer equally, then so be it. All bets are off now — let’s see what price they’re willing to pay for sucking up to Big Brother.

If you don’t realize Bush is Obama and Obama is Bush, and mix the Clintons in, and probably most presidents this century besides maybe JFK and Eisenhower, you need to stop drinking the Koolaid. Keep your independence this way.

I really admire young people and their so smart. The Tech Age is hear and the US along with other countries are clueless and have no idea what is going on. Just ask a Law Maker what a mouse is and you’ll hear answers like Mickey Mouse. Nebraska Senator Nelson doesn’t know what an ATM machine is. We know there were many crimes done over the 8 years because the result is this Recession. Knowledge is power and all Wikileak gives is the information for citizens to fully be informed. The Media have cheap reporters who dance for their money. I lost faith in NBC Chuck Todd when he said Sarah Palin was qualified to be President. Andrea Mitchell help Bush by lying about WMD’s and her husband former Fed Chief Alan Greenspan took his illegal money and put it overseas and even changed the currency from US dollars just in time to make a big profit. Ok he did come back and apologize to the American people for not telling them the bubble would bust and our Economy would soon be in a Recession.

Still, look at the fascist response coming from the U.S.! The U.S. is unequaled in fascism by all but Israel. It’s really hard to find a hero in all this.

  143. Whoa man, chill. Banks don’t “lend money to small businesses”, at least not anymore. That’s part of the problem, or haven’t you watched the news lately? Small banks or credit unions still lend to smaller operators, but the major banks do nothing but so-called “investment” banking nowadays, which is really running a massive casino with your money. So your defense of banks is quite ill advised.

Your language, though, is STELLAR!!!! (I AM being facetious here).

Crawl back into your cave, knuckle-dragger, until you learn how to use the English language.

  144. Oh man, the hyperbole, it hurts… As much as I disagree with the Obama administration on the Wikileaks issue, you’d be hard-pressed to find anything they have done that comes remotely close to fascism, and certainly not Nazism. So please tone down the rhetoric, otherwise you’ll look like a knuckle-dragging idiot.

    Too late…

The banks just about brought down the whole world’s economic system? No worries, stop moaning, it’s only a few million dead Africans and Asians.

40,000 Americans die every year of treatable illnesses because their government refuses to take money away from the rich to give them healthcare? O come on, stop complaining, it’s only been 360,000 dead Americans since 9/11.

1 out of 7 Americans on food stamps that provide only about half the food that one needs? Who cares, it’ll help them identify with the starving Africans.

The US government is spending 3 trillion on wars that don’t benefit the country and worsens its security? Gosh, no problem, we’ll just step up security measures until we can’t leave our homes out of fear of being attacked.

May I suggest that your incredible anger is misplaced?

Information gathered on a commercial website (such as a banks’) is qeued and screened (for things such as input source) before being passed to the mainframe; it is not directly passed to the mainframe, as most people posting here seem to think. The website is not an entrance or a pathway so much as it is a waiting room, where the user waits while the data is processed in the mainframe; when finished, the results are then sent back to the waiting room. Website data input does not directly affect the mainframe files; it is input at the website page, transferred and processed by the local mainframe application, and verified back to the account holder. Hacking the site is NOT the same as hacking account files.

Actually, WHY they did it is 100% irrelevant; the results are the same. If the Bush administration had been taken down and brought to justice, would you care whether it had been done out of sheer malice or sheer altruism, or anything else? Manny’s right; you let your prejudice against hackers distract and blind you to the much larger, much more imminent problem at hand, and you’ve missed the point entirely. Would it have bothered you if America had won her independence fighting the British simply because the colonists were bored and had nothing better to do? If somebody topples Goldman-Sachs or AIG in such a way, simply because they wanted to try out their new laptop, I’m not going to care in the least, if the ultimate demise of these entities was something that I truly wanted to witness.

Sometimes the greatest changes are made in spite of the motive. Historically, the only one I can call to mind right now is the attack on Fort Sumter, but our history is chock full of bad intentions behind actions that resulted in great and desirable changes.

Learn how NOT to look a gift horse in the mouth. If this anti-human crusade on the behalf of the world corporate community is to be exterminated, it’s more than likely going to happen in a similar way.

Excuse me, but do you know of a bank that is willingly loaning to small business right now? The do not loan so I cannot pay your salary, and you have to beg or the republicans to give you a pittance in unemployment. It was bankers who spread unregulated financial instruments throughout the worlds banking system, causing collapse when they did not work out as planned. Banks pushed the mortgage boom, eventually getting their fingers burned when the loans they had put out became unsustainable in a time of falling wages, but you were kind enough to give your money to keep them solvent. They reward you by shortening the turnaround time on credit card payments to set you up for a late fee.
The concept of banks is a sound one, but we are today facing banks that have grown beyond mens ability to manage them, and have bought congress to prevent themselves from being regulated. These are some friends of yours?
The bank in question in the story is most likely doing the bidding of the US government in an act of war against one man who has been convicted of nothing, not even charged.

I very much disagree with the Obama-Hitler comparison as well, but the Obama administration is very much vested in the interests of large corporations, and has done nothing to impede the corporatist domination of America, and in fact, supports business interests through its foreign and domestic policies.

Corporate domination of government = Fascism = reality in America.

  204. H.P. Loathecraft

Its called collateral damage. It is the elites who started this war on civil liberties and it is therefore they that are responsible for the collateral damage.
They intend to win at any cost and those under attack have every right to strike back in self-defense.

  205. H.P. Loathecraft

“maybe its just the american financial institutes, but the rest of the world still works!”

Really? Seems to me that trillions were recently paid out by the fed in secrecy to foreign banks to save them from collapse. Is that how “the rest of the world still works”?

  206. Anonymous

As previously mentioned, large banks are not investing in small businesses, and most loans these days are in the form of credit cards which come from credit companies whose sole interests are to keep Americans in debt. Truly reprehensible.

BTW, money doesn’t come from Banks, it is handled by banks. People earn money by working, without which banks would not exist. If we ‘broke’ banks, our money wouldn’t disappear, it simply wouldn’t be in banks anymore. You have it backwards.

Banks are what got us into this financial mess in the first place. Banks are corporations just like Halliburton, or Monsanto and their sole interests are to make money through manipulation, deceit, and outright criminal behavior, at the expense of the American citizen.

You seem very angry. Why you are on this board defending banks when they have most definitely never done anything for you (unless you work for one, but given your grammatical errors if you are employed by a bank you are probably merely a teller, and you get shit pay) except to take your money and charge you ridiculous fee’s when you overdraft on your checking account (which is technically illegal because Banks have no right to force you to accept credit, unfortunately the Government loves banks and no court will uphold the law in this regard) is simply beyond me.

Our freedoms are at stake, and if wikileaks is the fall guy, while nothing has been said of the Newspapers that are publishing his leaks, then I wonder if there isn’t a double standard being employed here. While the hack run is on, freeze trading for a few Wall Street banks and block more corporate web sites — then disappear, as do smart guerillas.

Exactly! It’s people in the US who care about what is happening in the rest of the world! I’d say 99+% of the people in the US would agree that trillions of $$ spent outside our borders could be infinitely wiser spent on the problems inside. Our country is failing it’s citizens, and many citizens of other countries all around the world. We all feel that we should be divesting our interests in helping or plundering the rest of the world and get back to some good old fashioned isolationism for the time being.

Actually Psycho Commercial “banks” are NOT the ones that got us into this mess. “Investment” banks, rating agencies and the AIG’s of the world got us into this mess.

Simply put the investment banks conned the rating agencies into slapping AAA ratings on pools of mortgages and other investments that should not have been AAA. Yes the ratings agencies should have done their job but given that their profits came (and still do) directly from the investment banks they had/have little incentive to buck the system.

Those AAA rated pools of mortgages were then sold to investors, pension funds and insurance companies who then turned to AIG and other financial institutions and bought insurance against default with an unproven financial instrument called a Credit Default Swap. Now Robert Rubin and Alan Greenspan convinced Slick Willie in the late 90′s that these “promises” of payment did not have to be regulated therefore you and I could sell CDS’s collect the premium and not have to show or demonstrate in anyway the ability to make good on that promise.

Since most of these SWAPS were sold by somewhat smart people they often bought a swap on their SWAPS just in case anything “bad” happened, therefore you could have 10 maybe 20 swaps covering a single $100 million mortgage pool.

Now what really set the stage for the collapse was the tremendous amount of leverage firms were allowed to have in buying and holding these “insured” and “AAA rated” mortgage pools. Investment Banks & Hedge Funds typically only had to put down 3% equity to buy a $100 million dollar pool and BORROW the rest from commercial banks and hedge funds who then bought more SWAPS to cover their asses.

Fast forward to 2007 when very, very, small portions of pools started to have problems. Not a big impact on the cash flow of the pool but a little appreciated accounting rule called “Mark to Market” rule cut the “stated value” of the pool and the 3% equity vanished overnight. Now what was a $100 million mortgage pool worth if the default rate went from a projected 1/2% to say 1%? Well this is where the auditors had NO F’n clue because, unlike stocks there was no liquid market for $100 million mortgage pools so the accountants erred on the side of ridiculous and market the pool down $10 sometimes $20 Million dollars. No problem thought the holders of these mortgage pools we’ve got the Credit Default Swaps to cash in…..well you can guess what happen next. The original writer of the SWAP never had the $10 million in cash but they had a SWAP so they turned to the writer of their SWAP who turned to the writer of their SWAP and on down the line until it got to the end and oh shit NOBDY had the money to pay the holder of the mortgage pool.

Since the investor didn’t, couldn’t or wouldn’t add equity to meet the loan terms, the commercial banks were forced to call the loan and generally took a big ass loss. So ya see Bloodydamn is RIGHT the commercial banks didn’t cause the collapse they only lent money to investment firms with THREE FUCKING % down which enabled the Ponzi scheme to grow to gargantuan proportions.

All this crap coming from the republican party calling for Assange’s arrest and death is just the republicans trying to make this a political football in hopes of damaging Obama! What I say always and always stand up to is what I believe to be the truth.

I don’t even see it as a religious thing, nor a racial thing but what is so stark staring obvious to me is that throughout recent history and from USA those jew bankstas have always been the root cause of the problems.

Note how they are so adept at setting one against another whilst stepping back to await picking up the spoils.

That dumbass Prime Minister of Israel for instance.

Imprisons Gazans citing terrorism acts whilst his government is disregarding International Law on Palestinian Land Rights.

As if that is no enough the place takes fire and they are unable to extinguish it and then he calls for neighborly assistance.

It’s like a Rabbi in London I once knew.

But when we wonder just how it is that one would begin to dismantle the out-of-control military and espionage machine referred to in cables as USG, it could easily begin with an event like this, that pierces the deception that it is 100% necessary to maintain a condition of nonstop war.

Point taken. However, the meaning you refer to is no more than a contemporary street colloquialism.
Anarchy is historically a form of governance with no central government and a community wide social contract.

    ***
“The key feature of anarchism is individual sovereignty, with governance by individual consent. Geo-archism is based on this principle, since an individual voluntarily joins a contractual community which then chooses to associate with other communities for mutual benefits, and may withdraw when those benefits are no longer obtained. An individual has the option of remaining outside any community, contracting for services as an individual.

In practice, most people would remain in some type of contractual community because historically human beings have wanted to live in communities and economically it is efficient for one geographic agency to provide for a mix of local related territorial services and to associate with others for services provided efficiently to larger areas. With most people in a confederation that spans a continent or even the entire earth, society would obtain the key benefit of minarchism or limited government: a uniform rule of law.” (Hospers, 1976).

  333. while this is essentially true, it is also a lot of the rich assholes that travel abroad, and many of the people who don’t have the ability to do so are not necessarily stupid hillbillies or anything either. Most people just want to raise their families and live their lives like anyone anywhere, but they don’t realize the control that the corporate interests, the media, and the government have over their lives. They certainly do not realize how they are being made puppets in this game. Yes, the American system is essentially broken. Unchecked capitalism cannot flourish. But I would say that at least half the people here have an idea of whats wrong with the system, but nobody has the means to change much because of such (corporate controlled) government censorship and biased (corporate controlled) media. But I suppose they ought to be afraid of WikiLeaks and the truth, because so many citizens have guns here, and if all of America knew about whats been going on in the name of “Freedom” they might stand up and take theirs back before it’s too late.

My anti-Wikileaks story started from the point Assagne release information on Hillary/UN. (I have some reason to disrespect UN lately.) So, Hillary was my hero. (In a political war, I believe being politically corrected is being fool. You have to play clever to win.) That’s where I started to doubt Assagne’s judgment if not suspect him playing insider role.
Blaming on war mongering temptation is fine, as soon as you also admit our side have all the good reason to fight the other side. (China/Tibet is one quick reminder for you.) _ When fighting with enemy, don’t lose your weapon. The best weapon in most cases, most of the time is the unity. Wikileaks doing a heck of a job of division with their top secret information releasing. Of course I have some reason to respect Assagne but I still think, what he is doing right now is ignorance.
