Wikipedia Locks Out “The Number”

Wired blogged the cracked processing key for HD DVD (you’ve seen it: "09 F9 11 02 …") nearly three months ago, but The Number’s power still grows. Today, the Wikipedia page named for it has been locked to prevent the former secret from being posted again. The page on HD DVD is locked, too, to keep out The Number. Wikipedia’s isn’t the only takedown: Digg earlier removed what’s been said to be the site’s all-time top post.
What a waste of time. Piracy is bad, yes, but does anyone really think the magic sequence is going to vanish from the Internet, or even become hard to find? Throw in the towel, folks.

Well I must say: Now Wikipedia is joining forces with DIGG? DIGG took a huge hit with what they did! Watch out Wikipedia! You might be slammed too! LOL! The net has moved and Digg has seen it effect and power…
More to come…

This has turned into something other then the number just ‘being on the internet’. This stupid thing is popping up everywhere, mostly in places completely out of context. Its not about the people vs the MPAA anymore, now its become “the users” vs “the website operators”. Its a sad state of affairs, when it comes to that.
I’d hate to say it, but it seems mostly to be the fault of the digg users.

Digg actually reversed their stance on the number. Go check it out. I applaud their efforts personally.
I love crackers/hackers. I’m one of them. We pawn and love it!!!!

Yup, good old internet. Ignore what the person says, call him a name.

Meditative art to gaze upon when contemplating these weighty matters:

This hex key is growing exponentially. Though I’m kinda pissed as I look at the posts here that all anybody can do is post the numbers. Spread the numbers! But don’t spam the people who are supporting you!
I find it quite humorous when people think they can control information on the Internet. Heck, you can buy T-shirts with the code already: https://www.goodstorm.com/item/sean_morrisey/09f911029d74e35bd84156c5635688c0

I cannot believe this. This is amazing, I have never seen a number so many times in one day. Viva anti-drm. Muahahaha.

Has anyone here ever heard of a cease-and-desist order? That’s what Digg and Wikipedia are trying to avoid.
Wikipedia is forced to host the code now at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Ipblocklist
WC is half right.
Wikipedia isn’t about free speech.
It’s about an encyclopedia, backed up by reliable sources.
And a blog post doesn’t always cut the mustard as far as reliable sources go.
Man, what a bunch of fucking losers. And to here them call intellectual property theft “freedom of speech” just makes me sick. These assholes have no idea what that freedom means.
Wikipedia is justified in protecting the article. They were probably trying to stop people from repeatedly posting the number out of context (like some of the other comments on this page). The number isn’t illegal, but it’s not really encyclopedic either.
Be part of tech history and buy a cool shirt!!

Horrible… I was part in a murdercase as a victim that survived. Wikipedia wrote about the case in very detailed words. I asked them to remove the article, but it took many days and ended with suspension of me as a user.
The article about “the number” was closed down in matter of minutes…
Is that number more important than the wish to want my privacy off the net? Oh I forgot… money money money…
Maybe I can understand people’s complaints about digg, but wikipedia is not a repository of any wisdom you wish to place on it. It’s an encyclopedia, and the key code is not relevant. It doesn’t justify an article of its own either.

You are missing the point. The point is its a number, a number is not intellectual property. No one should be able to file a DMCA take down over a number.
I mean is this some magic number? If I drink a $60 bottle of absinthe and ponder that number do I suddenly see the code flash before my eyes of how to use it to break the DRM on a HD-DVD?
I think not.
With CSS the battle was over the algorithm being released. With that code sequence one had what was needed to actually decode a scrambled DVD.
Here, all we have is a number. The media needs to wake up and realize how asinine these DMCA take downs are.
KJelle,
Although we feel for your trouble, you’re comparing apples to oranges. One is markedly less legal information to print than the other. So, it’s not money, money, more like lawsuit, lawsuit.
FFS, a number alone holds no encyclopedic value, so stop spamming their articles with it. That’s why it’s kept being removed, not for some idiotic conspiracy.
Try constructively contributing to their articles about this series of events too, because as you’ll find out, they aren’t removed.
Jeez, if Wikipedia made things your way, it’s be a database of serial numbers, hash keys, and encryption keys, not an encyclopedia. :-p
Guess what – it’s still on wikipedia.

passphrase is “mpaalol”
The Wikipedia entry was deleted because having an article at that location makes no sense from an encyclopaedic perspective, the code is readily available at heaps of other pages (“Illegal prime” is an example).
And those idiots posting that “freedom of speech is dead” because of Digg.com’s decision are really hopeless, since when have rights and liberties depended on blogs and social networking sites? Does MySpace dictate whether you have a right to trial? So how does Digg dictate your right to free speech, start a site for all I care, just fuck off the main page of Digg with that crap over and over again
Have you sen my child? He looks like this….
09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0
Not that number, I am The Number!
09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0
The reason would be that we’re a project to write an encyclopedia, not a public graffiti wall. With idiots cut’n'pasting the number into every web form on teh intarweb, we suffered the same distributed spam attack as anywhere. But distributed spam is still the same effect as spam, and we have decided “fuck that.” That’s not what Wikipedia is for. You want to paint “09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0″ in fifty-foot high letters on every Hollywood studio, I’m all for that. You want to splatter it across Wikipedia, you can fuck off. Simple enough?
“Where am I?”
“On the Internet.”
“What do you want?”
“The key.”
“Whose side are you on?”
“That would be telling…. We want the key. They Key! THE KEY!” (Some fans hear “In formation!”)
“You can’t post it.”
“By hook or by crook, we will.”
“Who are you?”
“The new AACS.”
“Who is Number One?”
“You are Number 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0.”
“I am not a number — I am a free man!”
(Laughter from DMCA lawyer.)
you didnt have the guts to post it yourself i see.
Some laws, notably the DMCA, were just meant to be broken and abolished by sheer civil disobedience. Anyone who enjoys an alcoholic beverage on occasion has the masses who laughed prohibition out of existence to thank for.
Btw, I notice wikipedia has no qualms referencing Teh Prohibition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prohibition
I don’t think it’s really a matter of trying to eradicate the number from the Internet. It’s just not (in my opinion) encyclopaedic information. There should definitely be discussion of the number, but I don’t think it’s appropriate to post the number itself. By analogy, it’s appropriate to have articles on notable pornographic actors, but it’s inappropriate to have a load of pornographic pictures in their articles; not because Wikipedia is censored for minors (it’s not), but because it’s simply not particularly encyclopaedic material. I suppose I can see how people might argue that the number itself is encyclopaedic, but I don’t really see what it would add to the article (beyond mention of it) other than a tool for illegal activity. I’m not particularly bothered by people copying a few HD DVDs, but I think they should have to find the code elsewhere.
The protection of the code may or may not be stupid. Civil disobedience may or may not be warranted. I just think that using Wikipedia as a forum for it undermines what serious credibility it may or may not have. Will the number appear in the Encyclopaedia Britannica? Not that they’re identical things, but still…
Sure, numbers can’t be copyrighted or trademarked or patented or whatever, but it’s all about the context and intention. Would it be OK to post a load of people’s credit card PINs?
I don’t know, I just don’t think it’s some sort of major blow to freedom of speech or anything.
If true all you would need is a built in 3G/EVDO card model and you would have a device that
would turn the telco industry upside down.
