Bukovyna Week in Austria

  By Natalia ZHYTARIUK, Chernivtsi

Beginning this past spring and continuing into the fall, art galleries and museums in Austria have been hosting a cultural event called “Without Borders.” As part of this cultural extravaganza, the launch of Bukovyna Week was held in the medieval castle of Zoel- am-Pram, where aficionados of Bukovynian history and culture gathered to celebrate. The well-known Chernivtsi-based painter Oleh Liubkivsky fittingly represented the art of Bukovyna. His canvases depicting the romantic vestiges of “Little Vienna,” as Chernivtsi is still often called, found many fans among the Austrian public, including 90-year-old Dr. Otto Habsburg, a descendant of Kaiser Franz Josef, whose autograph the artist brought home together with other pleasant impressions.

Over the years Mr. Liubkivsky has participated in many national and international exhibitions. He has exhibited his works at Kyiv’s National Art Museum, taken part in the prestigious Brussels exhibition of modern European engraving, “From Venice to Helsinki,” and in the recent shows of Bukovynian art in Austria.
