For the first time, I am throwing ca. 100 students in my functional programming course to do a homework with Probula https://wasowski.codeberg.page/probula/ . Probula is my own probabilistic programming language (aka Bayesian inference library and a modeling dialect). It is far form the big tools like #pymc or #pyro, but it is good enough to discuss probability as a monad, and solve simple exercises in discrete and continuous space.
For 2-3 years now the course has used an even smaller library, the original core from which Probula evolved. I kept growing it, to support various research activities, and now I decided to switch the course to a more proper setup. I hope that not many bugs will be found, and I am thrilled about the prospect of more users.
On this occasion (to support my new lecture slides), I released Probula 0.2.4 today, with small extensions:
- Support for LogNormal distribution
- A complete support for fluent API for constructing models, with a uniform treatment of all 11 predefined distributions (Dirac, discrete uniform, Bernoulli, Binomial, Poisson, Gaussian, log-normal, Exponential, Laplace, continuous uniform, and continuous uniform over probabilities).
- Allowing discrete uniform to range over multisets (not just sets).

I dont like #earlgray tea. But today i will drink a cup.
Elon Musk wants to put data centers in space. But to power a single GPU rack you need 1000 m3 of solar panels. He talks about putting 1TW of solar panels in orbit, corresponding to 50km x 50 km of solar panels. Then there’s cooling, Musk claims it’s a “no brainer” because “space is cold, 3°K”. But there’s no cooling in vacuum. The truth is that Musk is a grifting snake oil salesman merely trying to get investors to give him money. Thirty years of hurt (and eleven years of writing about it) …
Every September, as the melt season on the Greenland ice sheet fizzles out, I and my colleague Martin Stendel do the same thing: we sit down with a year's worth of daily surface mass balance maps and weather charts from the Polar Portal, work out how the ice sheet fared, and write it up as a guest post for Carbon Brief. Our latest one, the 11th in the series covers September 2025 to August 2026 and this…

In 1969, Kurt Vonnegut offered this sharp and still remarkably timely critique of American attitudes toward poverty through the voice of Howard W. Campbell Jr. in Slaughterhouse-Five.
The belief that anyone can become wealthy encourages people experiencing poverty to blame themselves rather than question the economic and social structures that shape their circumstances. #books
Animation of buildings over time in Danish city of Aalborg. Year in top left corner.
Only existing buildings are part of animations.
Building data source is the Central Register of Buildings and Dwellings (BBR). Data is freely available. GPKG file requires no login but takes up 5 GB uncompressed.
Are LLMs and agentic AI killing inter-student communication? It was always a challenge to keep the course online forum active. But this year it is essentially dead.

Perhaps way too late, but just decided to close down my #facebook account, after 19 years (opened Nov 8, 2007). Facebooks political activity has made me increasingly uneasy. For a long time, facebook also lost its function as a way to contact people. There are extremely few that I only know there. The only thing I will miss, and badly so, are the Polish hiking groups. TBH, never found a suitable replacement for them. Hiking will feel more lonely, when the main service to share it with becomes a phone map app.
So, today I was informed that my current employment is terminated. This implies that I will be looking for a new job. I know it might be a stretch, but I thought why not give #GetFediHired a try. Due to many circumstances, it has to be a full-time position in #Denmark. 🇩🇰
I can bring my senior expertise in IT security and vulnerability research. We can, of course, discuss related roles as well. You can find my profile at: https://www.linkedin.com/in/infosecdj/
I can also market my decapping and deprocessing skills, but I fear the market depth for that is in single digits. :-) But if someone has interest, please feel free to have a look at http://infosecdj.net/ for what I was able to do in my home lab!
Of course, any and all boosts will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
In case I'm not the only one who noticed a distinct decrease in quality (and quantity) of search results in Google Scholar (few relevant hits, not finding papers even if I paste the full title in the search bar) and had mentally almost given up on it: it's apparently not (directly) caused by Google's deterioration as I had assumed, but by searching when not logged in/in private mode (as I always do). Searching when logged in works just fine, sigh... (I might also just be late to the party.)
A key just locked in my keyboard and deleted about 100 emails from my mailbox before I managed to disconnect the keyboard. What will I do about this, what will I do about this, what will I do about this ..

I would have loved that #3blue1brown existed when I was an undergrad student.
