Jennifer Madeleine Gilruth (born 1984) is a Scottish politician who has been the Deputy First Minister of Scotland since 2026.[1] She was the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills from 2023 until 2026. She is a member of the Scottish National Party (SNP). She has been the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Mid Fife and Glenrothes since 2016.[2]

Political career

[change | change source]

In February 2020, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon appointed Gilruth to the Scottish Government as the minister for culture, Europe and international development. When Humza Yousaf became first minister of Scotland, she became education secretary.[3][4] After Yousaf's resignation as First Minister and Leader of the Scottish National Party in May 2024, Gilruth kept the role of Cabinet Secretary for Education in the Swinney government.[5]

Gilruth was appointed as Deputy First Minister on 20 May 2026, replacing Kate Forbes, who had chosen to retire from politics at the 2026 election.[1] Alongside her role as Deputy First Minister, Gilruth was also appointed as the Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Local Government by John Swinney.[1]

Personal life

[change | change source]

In July 2017, it was announced Gilruth was in a relationship with Kezia Dugdale, who was, at that time, leader of the Scottish Labour Party.[6] In June 2022, Gilruth and Dugdale married in a private ceremony.[7]
