Salem Carries Out Infrastructure Improvements throughout Downtown

Mayor Dominick Pangallo announced that, thanks to the MBTA Communities Catalyst Fund grant, the City of Salem advancing a series of targeted improvements to the city's infrastructure. These improvements include repairing sewer pipes, replacing water infrastructure, and upgrading the stormwater drainage system in varying places in and around downtown Salem. 

The projects made possible by the Catalyst Fund grant are in addition to extensive infrastructure improvement projects already planned or underway across the community as part of the City’s current Capital Improvement Plan. “I am pleased that we’re able to expand our existing infrastructure improvements work this year with these additional downtown projects,” said Mayor Pangallo, “I am grateful to the Healey-Driscoll administration for making the MBTA Communities Catalyst Fund available to us to address these critical needs, as well as to City of Salem staff who worked to secure this funding and who are now working to implement these improvements. Thanks in advance for patience and understanding through the construction period, as we carry out these important upgrades to downtown Salem.”

As part of this initiative, the community will notice ongoing work in and around the downtown area. This construction is scheduled from now through June 30th. 

Details and the schedule, weather permitting, for these projects is as follows:

  • There will be traffic impacts throughout the duration of the daytime work.
  • The first week will include some night work from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM, along with two (2) nighttime water shutdowns.
  • The second week will involve daytime work in the grass area between the Bridge Street off-ramp and North Street.
