EDITED- For those that are wondering, Salem's ZB Appeals Committee voted unanimously to uphold the revocation of Prime Group Holdings building permit. For those also truly interested, and can't wait for the city's minutes to be brought forward, there are lots of interesting articles, (think reddit) out there about just how underhanded and untrustworthy PGH is and what they tried to get away with. Its like an onion with many layers. IMO, the little guy and Salem, proudly, has won this time!

Salem PowerChoice, Salem’s municipal group electricity buying program, will change to new, 3-year prices in December. While electricity supply prices have increased overall, most participants will continue to pay less than National Grid’s current residential and commercial Basic Service prices. All participants will enjoy three years of price stability. Salem PowerChoice has saved Salem electricity customers more than $24 million compared with National Grid’s prices since launching in 2016. “Salem PowerChoice, the City’s electricity supply program, saves residents and businesses money on energy bills and lets them lock in multi-year rates for greater predictability,” said Mayor Dominick Pangallo. “With this most recent change, Salem residents on PowerChoice’s basic plan will pay 9% less than National Grid’s rate, meaning more money saved. Over the decade of PowerChoice, those savings have come to around $24 million, back into the pockets of Salem residents. Programs like PowerChoice are one way we’re working to reduce costs on Salem residents and make our community more affordable.” New, fixed prices (December 2026 – December 2029) • Basic option – 15.560 ¢/kWh: Lower than National Grid’s current residential and commercial Basic Service prices. Most participants will be enrolled in the Basic option. • Plus option – 18.130 ¢/kWh: Will continue to provide electricity that is 100% from renewable sources. Available by request. National Grid’s Basic Service prices (fixed through January 31, 2027) • Residential: 17.185 ¢/kWh • Commercial: 15.568 ¢/kWh Please note that because National Grid’s current prices are fixed through January 31, 2027, and their future prices are not known, savings beyond that date cannot be guaranteed. Additional program change Historically, the program has offered a third option, Standard, which was designed to include an additional 20% of participants’ electricity from renewable sources in the New England region. Until recently, the beneficial impact of purchasing additional renewable energy was an increase in demand for more renewable energy on our local grid. Renewable energy developers saw that demand and built new renewable energy projects to meet it. However, recent shifts in federal policy have made it significantly harder to build new renewable energy infrastructure. Because of these barriers, buying an additional 20% from renewable sources is, for now, not having the desired impact. As a result, the Standard option is no longer being offered. Participants in Standard will be moved to Basic, which provides the minimum amount of electricity from renewable sources required by state law. The Plus option remains available for those who want electricity that is 100% from renewable sources. The City of Salem remains committed to supporting renewable energy and anticipates adding renewable energy back into Salem PowerChoice in the future, as the renewable energy landscape continues to evolve. Important information for participants: • No action is required for current Salem PowerChoice participants. The price change will occur automatically in December, and the new price will appear on January electric bills. • The program’s electricity supplier will remain First Point Power, and participants will continue to see “Salem PowerChoice – First Point Power” on their bills. • Participation is not required. Participants are free to choose a different program option or leave the program at any time with no fee or penalty. Those wishing to make a change before the new prices take effect should submit their request no later than 14 days before their December 2026 meter read date, found on their November National Grid electric bill. To learn more, change options, or opt out, visit the program website at SalemMA.gov/PowerChoice or call customer support with our program consultants at .
