City of Salem to welcome annual Black Picnic to Salem Willows Park on Negro Election Day

Salem City News Posted on July 09, 2025

For centuries, Black families have gathered with family, friends and loved ones at the Salem Willows on the third Saturday in July. The City of Salem is honored to serve as the home for this community-centered celebration once again this year.

Historically known as the Black Picnic, starting in 2023 the Commonwealth officially recognized this date as Negro Election Day, in commemoration of the first Black voting system dating back to 1740.

This year falling on Saturday, July 19, the Salem Willows Park looks forward to welcoming families and friends from near and far for this annual celebration of Black history and togetherness.

Attendees should note that the Salem Willows is undergoing an improvement project and, as a result, a small area in the park is temporarily fenced off as those renovations progress. The City apologizes for any inconvenience and very much appreciates the patience of all park users as the Salem Willows Signature Park project advances to ensure Salem Willows can be enjoyed for generations to come!
