  • Totally fair. I think I overshot a bit with the criticality of my comment, because it is shitty for most of us and it lacked sympathy. All I wanted to say is that we are wasting energy on hating on something we personally can’t affect.

It’s another thing that I saw many people from that generation craving and trying for change. Maybe that’s not your experience. It can be especially hard if you have someone in the family actively believing characters like Trump, Orbán, AfD. I believe most people want what’s best for them and theirs, and it’s usually fear or narrow-mindedness that gets them hooked on populistic rhetoric.

I mean just look at the US politics stage. Boomers are dying out and they are surrounded by bad actors from the genX and millenial groups waiting to take over. We are losing energy on hating/blaming, all the while we are being divided into groups of age, ethnicity, religion. Who’s best interest is this division?

Yeah, I’m lucky, cuz I only have a 50% experience of yours. Please accept my sympathies.

Maybe I’m too angry to express myself properly, but I hate it that these types of hater posts get so much attention. And if I keep going with my rant, I’ll just sound like Patrick Swayze’s character from Donnie Darko.

I don’t really give a shit. All I’m saying is this is the type of petty hatred that divides us. You can be a fuckin hater and spend your energies on rhat (goodness me, I am guilty of that), but hating on a generation in general is just crying over spilt milk.

You guys know you’re getting hoodwinked? Yeah, it’ll do you wonders if you start hating on your elders. All of our mysery is definitely their fault. No, they’re not victims of class warfare, like us, sure. Hate your elders, that’ll solve everything.

  • Some expenses are on par with California (eating out and other such luxuries), but if you have a chance to cook, you can make the dollar (or forint) last.

But more to the point, the folk are just coming out of (hopefully) a 16 year period of hostile policy (craaaazy levels of corruption), and with high prices and low wages, our moodiness can be overwhelming.

Definitely take the chance, it will change your whole view on life, but prepare yourself emotionally. Be kind, but don’t expect the openness of US Americans. But whenever you do run into someone who shows openness, they are the genuine article.

I’m guessing you’ll be mostly mingling with other foreigners (good times, travellers are fun), but you might want to do yourself a favor and try to get a handle on some basic phrases of language. Hungarian is too far away on the language trees to be comprehensible, and half a year is only enough for the poliest of glots to learn our language. But some kind Hungarian words and phrases can make a world of difference.

    Good luck, have fun!

  • It smelled a bit of AI, and I’m still not sure this is untouched.

So the comic is real and is from 2020, but it’s in full color. Here is the author’s insta page. It does mention that sketches are available on Patreon, so maybe someone just shared that and is making the rounds.

Maybe it’s just the style, but man are we screwed. Friggin low background steel.

  • Doesn’t that lifestyle become lonely after a while? I tried some car living for a while (didn’t even have curtains, so I ‘couldn’t throw rocks at others’). I found a nice groove with a gym (went there for showering, then eventually working out as well), but I felt like a pariah in the city. Cops shooed me away twice, which made me feel insecure everywhere.

  • Thank you, this was exactly what I needed!

The only fantasy I could stomach so far was the Discworld series and Game of Thrones. For some reason I get hung up on magic otherwise.

Thanks for notes, I gave the first lines a quick skim (I try not to watch trailers for movies either, rather go in blind based on word of mouth or hype), and I think I’ll give Service Model a shot, then go into Shroud when I’m ready.

And great Stephenson thread as well, btw. I’ll be coming back to this in the future.
