  • No. An HOA has power over you. A neighborhood union gives you power over external parties through strength in numbers.

HOA will complain you have trash on your lawn. A neighborhood union can help you take on the waste management company that keeps half ass emptying your cans and leaving the remainder blowing in the wind.

An HOA will fine you for having the police show up at your house repeatedly. A neighborhood union can help you push back against police harassment.

An HOA will tell you you can’t plant veggies in your yard. A neighborhood union can join together to coordinate planting, tools, and other resources that could reduce the blight of grass farming.

An HOA is usually a compulsory organization with obligatory fees acting as a layer of government without the usual methods of redress when it’s out of line. A neighborhood union is a voluntary organization created to serve a common good.

  • It’s a matter of thresholds and quantities. The business doesn’t need everybody to consent to its existence. It just needs to raise enough money to continue existing. And it only needs to continue existing long enough to gobble up the competition so the choice can’t be made between them and an alternative retailer the choice must be instead made between getting the thing from them or not getting the thing.

Plenty of us can opt out of patronizing these institutions but that doesn’t Force change. That’s what government is for.

We aren’t going to be able to vote with our wallets hard enough to change business practices that are abusive and toxic. We’re going to need the government to do that. That’s a substantial part of its job.

  • You don’t need somebody’s dead name to do a background check. Not a legal one at least. Now if you’re trying to dig into things that you probably don’t have a legal right to dig into you might want that information but there doesn’t seem to be a legitimate need for your employer to have it, and asking for it is suspicious because there’s no legitimate need for it which indicates that the only reason it’s being asked for is probably an unscrupulous reason.

  • I remember asking my mother in the days before the election if she really thought the Democratic party leadership was willing to sacrifice America just insulate Israel from consequences and she just couldn’t wrap her mind around the idea that Israel and Palestine was a big deal because it just didn’t show up in her news that much…

“I don’t think everybody’s as plugged into the news as You are ‘Faithful’ I don’t think that’s as big a deal as you seem to think it is.”.

That’s when I knew we were doomed.

She should have come out publicly against Israel’s behavior and said she was willing to rein them in. That was the minimum she should have done. Anybody telling her otherwise was willing to sacrifice America for Israel.

Israel was the litmus test. Can you call water wet? Is the sky blue? Is genocide wrong? Can we stop funding it?

Her failure to do this was a failure not a difference of opinion. Whoever the next candidate is is going to need to acknowledge the reality of the world and that might mean removing the Zionist lobby from the conversation entirely by force if necessary.

  • I’d like to believe that there is a law with tensile strength to bind him but we as a society don’t really have any mechanism to address the kind of corruption that an infinitesimal fragment of his wealth can cause.

I think he’s too big to prosecute. I think Trump is America’s mask off moment and we are now openly rearranging the machinery of government to turn us all into sausages to be served up to oligarchs.

The problem is that they want something like slavery but they don’t want you to have a house or food. They want the government to keep the slaves for them. Elon personally is willing to spend a functionally unlimited amount of money to ensure that he gets to be king of Earth.

The oligarchs are crazy, but they’re not stupid.

  • She would probably have to get a second job to support them which means she would never see them and she would be working all the time and miserable.

Having a kid costs so much money it’s hard to explain even to my parents one of whom was a grant writer and nonprofit organizer for children’s healthcare.

If you don’t have at least $50,000 in the bank that you could spend without suffering you’re not ready for what the hospital is going to do to you. We have totally fucked this whole country up.

But we need new people here. We don’t necessarily need Americans to make them. Plenty of people see what we do here and come here anyway. They are willing and ready to make the kind of sacrifices necessary have another generation of their family, and we generally as a society are benefiting from their ambitions to do that.

I don’t understand how so many people can be so pro-birth and anti-human at the same time, but I don’t begrudge people who run the numbers and say the math doesn’t math and so abstain from having children.
