Thanks for years of faithful service! I used Windhawk to get my windows taskbar to the side of my desktop. Now that Microsoft has finally made that a feature again, I’ll delete Windhawk. But wanted to let you know I appreciate you guys and thank you for many years of supporting a windows modification that should’ve been standard.
Just wanted to say thanks for all the years of support!
I really wanted to drop a message and say how much I appreciate what you guys have done over the years. You kept a Windows customization alive that, honestly, probably should’ve been a standard feature in the first place.
Thanks again for the awesome work and all the years of support. Much appreciated!
You’re welcome, and thank you for the great feedback!
Hello,
For an important project Im using windows tech preview builds:
9834 (kernal 6.4)
9888 (kernel 10)
I tried almost every ver of 7+ TT from 5.8 to latest and i got “loading library failed”
Kindly let me know if you can provide support code and how much i have to pay you.
Good day.
Hi,
These tech preview builds aren’t supported, there’s no support code to make it work, it has to be implemented, which is a non-trivial task. If you’d like to hire me for that, you can email me via the email on the top of this page.
it doesnt work
What doesn’t work?
After the latest update in Windhawk, the ‘Vertical Taskbar for Windows 11’ mod no longer works for me (Win11 LTSC IoT)
Please attach debug logs by following the instructions on the Troubleshooting page:
https://github.com/ramensoftware/windhawk/wiki/Troubleshooting#some-or-all-windhawk-mods-dont-work
I’m not registered on github. Here’s the log content:
Thanks, should be fixed in version 1.4.1, let me know if it works for you.
Yep, works now, thanks.
I’ve been unable to download or browse mods on the windhawk app for a week now.
– i can browse mods on the website on firefox
– when i click to browse mods on the app it sais “loading failed” and to check my internet connection (my internet connection is perfectly fine)
– it sais “unable to verify the first certificate” for mods.windhawk.net
– ive tried reinstalling windhawk, resetting network settings, clearing app data and restarting my laptop.
– i dont have a vpn and dont have any antivirus software apart from windows security.
– my windows is up to date
How do I fix this?
Seems to be something with your internet settings. You can try Windhawk 2.0 alpha, perhaps it will work:
https://github.com/ramensoftware/windhawk/releases
I have downloaded it and I have a similar problem again.
I received a pop up saying
“something went wrong
failed to reach
https://mods.windhawk.net/catalogs/en.json: WinHTTP send request failed (os error 12175)”
The error is
ERROR_WINHTTP_SECURE_FAILURE. There’s some problem with the way certificates are configured on your computer. Check that and the time on your computer which should be correct. Look up for solutions for that error online.I’ve tried absolutely everything:
Clean uninstall + reinstall
Network reset + restarts
Deleted all Windhawk folders (appdata/programdata/local)
Verified time/date correct
Ran sfc /scannow (found/repaired corrupt files)
Tried both 1.x, alpha 2.0, and alpha 5 builds
Tried regular AND offline installer (170 MB)
Tested on home + school WiFi
No VPN/antivirus interference
Windows fully updated
Still getting ERROR_WINHTTP_SECURE_FAILURE (12175) on https://mods.windhawk.net/catalogs/en.json.
The offline installer didn’t help because it still needs to reach the mods catalog.
This has been ongoing for around 5 days now. Is there a server-side fix coming, or is there a workaround
SSL is fine:
https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=mods.windhawk.net&latest
So it’s something on your end.
If Windhawk is unable to access the internet, it can still be used by compiling the mods manually. For instructions, please see this comment: https://github.com/ramensoftware/windhawk/issues/175#issuecomment-2041321538
I’m afraid I can’t help further, you need to troubleshoot your environment.
There’s another issue with the Vertical Taskbar mod:
After my (ultrawide) monitor has been turned off and on again, the start menu appears clipped off to the side, 2/3 of it hidden by the taskbar and by the end of the monitor.
Please create an issue here:
https://github.com/ramensoftware/windhawk-mods/issues
Post your mod settings, a screenshot, the exact reproduction steps, and whether it happens with the “Use the native taskbar when possible” option disabled too or not.
Hi i just want to know that is there any way to apply the mods for only 1 user not for all users
Hi,
Windhawk 2.0 alpha 7 adds per-user mod configuration in the mods’ advanced tab. You can get Windhawk 2.0 alpha here:
https://github.com/ramensoftware/windhawk/releases
Thank you for you software, however I can’t use it, perhaps you can help me in resolving the issue I am having
I have reinstalled the software many times and it does these things
1. It crashes by opening a gray window with nothing in it
2. I have to close it and open it in Safe mode, select the modes etc. then close
3. When I try to open it one more time it crashes with a “-1073741819” error code.
Please advise what should I do.
Thank you
Best regards,
Carlos
Hi Carlos,
Since it works in safe mode, perhaps one of the mods causes it. Have you tried disabling all mods? Disabling some of them?
I just wanted to thank you.
Thank you so much, because of you I made my windows into something that actually looks great.
Dear Michael,
I hope this message finds you well. I am reaching out regarding your excellent Windows 11 Taskbar Styler mod for Windhawk.
I have a custom visual setup running beautifully on my desktop, but I have hit a brick wall trying to modify the transparency of my background bar, and I was hoping you could point me in the right direction.
I am currently running the OS26_Liquid_Glass_variant_ClearMacDock theme. I absolutely love how my custom rounded-square app icon containers look, and I want to keep them exactly the same. However, I want to make the long background container bar directly behind them highly translucent or completely transparent so that my desktop wallpaper bleeds through.
I have tried injecting various configurations in Textual Mode to target the layers, such as:
theme: OS26_Liquid_Glass_variant_ClearMacDock controlStyles: - target: Taskbar.TaskbarFrame > Grid#RootGrid > Taskbar.TaskbarBackground > Grid > Rectangle#BackgroundFill styles: - Fill=Transparent - target: Rectangle#BackgroundStroke styles: - Fill=Transparent - target: Taskbar.TaskbarFrame#TaskbarFrame styles: - Background=TransparentWhile Windhawk accepts the YAML code successfully with zero parsing errors, absolutely nothing changes visually on my screen. The long container bar stubbornly remains dark.
I have confirmed that Windows Transparency Effects are globally turned ON in my system settings, I have restarted explorer.exe multiple times, and I am not running any conflicting third-party taskbar apps. It seems that the pre-packaged OS26 theme variant might be hardcoding a custom background brush texture or a WindhawkBlur constant that is completely locking out my style overrides.
Since you are the creator of this incredible engine, could you please fix this within the next mod update for the Windows 11 Taskbar Styler? Since the issue is isolated to how this specific theme preset interacts with the mod’s style targets, resolving it through a direct mod update rather than a full Windhawk application release would be perfect. Deploying it as a mod update ensures that users running both the standard installer and the portable installer versions will receive the fix seamlessly.
Alternatively, if it requires a manual tweak on my end, please let me know the correct target or resource variable I need to modify to cleanly dissolve this background bar.
Thank you so much for your time, your hard work, and for building such an incredible customization tool for Windows!
Best regards,
Zubair
Hi, I suggest to check out the taskbar styling guide:
https://github.com/ramensoftware/windows-11-taskbar-styling-guide
And the issues:
https://github.com/ramensoftware/windows-11-taskbar-styling-guide/issues
If you don’t find a solution, you can create a new issue.
Alternatively, you can join the Windhawk Discord server and ask the community.
Hi, I’ve been using Windhawk for at least more than 5 months and I love it.
Seeing a amazing community making an operating system greater is beautiful.
Of course there’s things that can be improved like: optimization (which is always good); and more QoL features.
One feature i would like to see on Windhawk is smooth scrolling, and more ways too customize the app in itself, or ways to disable things like the ”Featured mods” on the Home Tab, and on the About Tab please make the show the version of the app so i don’t miss any new feature.
But specially thanks for the awesome app, and keep up the great work!
Hi Michael Maltsev (m417z),
I am writing regarding a portable version of Windhawk, not an .exe file, a .zip file. So could you create a full portable .zip file version of Windhawk so that people on computers with the highest levels of restrictions can freely customize their Windows PCs? (I’m one of them…), Please make a portable .zip file version.
Thanks,
Zubair
Hi, you can simply run the Windhawk installer and choose to extract the portable version. It doesn’t require administrator rights, and I can’t think of a reason you can’t run it but can run Windhawk from a zip – either it’d work, or running programs is restricted, in which case you won’t be able to run Windhawk from a zip as well. If there’s a specific reason I didn’t think of, let me know.
Well, I can’t run .exe files on my pc- but .zip file portable version are perfect as my PC is almost way too restricted, portable .zip files work perfect, So could you please make a portable .zip file version of Windhawk, so that the people with the highest levels of restrictions can freely customize their windows pc, please Michael.
Sorry, but either something is wrong with your reasoning, or I’m missing something. What will “.zip file portable version” contain? Most likely, windhawk.exe, among other files. So if you can run windhawk.exe from the zip, you can also run windhawk-setup.exe. But if you can’t run windhawk-setup.exe, you also won’t be able to use the “.zip file portable version”.
I can run run the zip file portable version- as I have done that for many other apps for example 7zip portable and it opens, so if you could make a .zip file portable version, i WILL be able to run it.
What happens if you run windhawk-setup.exe?
If you can’t run it, then use another computer, run it there to extract the portable version, and zip it.
When I run the Windhawk-setup.exe- it opens and immediately closes as I have parental controls, if you can make a portable version- a .zip file, then I would be able to run it perfectly. Without it immediately closing
Then why wouldn’t windhawk.exe close the same way?
In any case, I won’t be making a zip, but you can make it yourself if you think it’ll work for you.
Yeah, even the Windhawk, exe closes the exact same way. So if you could please make a .zip file, it would be perfect
What will the zip file contain? I don’t think I know what you mean anymore.
All the exact same files as the regular Windhawk-setup.exe would contain when done- just in a zip file so that anyone on a PC with very high restrictions can customize their PC
And also the files coded/programmed in a way that doesn’t get blocked by restrictions
I don’t know how to do that.
But you are such a good programmer, and made .exe files for the setup file, and don’t know how to put them in a zip file?!,
And if you make a .zip file, the restrictions set up on the PC would not recognize it as Windhawk, and let it through to let the portable app open up. I can wait, so please make a portable, .zip file version of Windhawk.
