This is the Wikivoyage Lounge on the Wikimedia Meta-Wiki. Here we discuss the Wikivoyage project across all its language versions. For old discussions, see the archive and Summit archives.
Wikivoyages need to stop using Kartographer cross-loading content from WMCS
[edit]Per this thread on en.wv's Pub, this is a cross-Wikivoyage issue. I am raising it here for visibility to all Wikivoyage editions, but I don't know how active any coordinating conversation will really be here. ―Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 14:40, 26 May 2026 (UTC)
- That means markers and listings will be unavailable, right? Unless there is an alternative solution, this would be disruptive for Wikivoyages. Are there any plans to implement a feature similar to the group attribute? Or should we prepare a huge Mapframe containing all the markers in the article? @Jdforrester (WMF) Tmv (talk) 02:32, 6 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Tmv: Yes, that's my question. The Wikivoyage community has had this pending for a decade now; I'm asking if anyone is co-ordinating the idea of implementing the feature. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 16:17, 6 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Jdforrester (WMF) Hmm, I haven't seen any discussion on this migration.
- @RolandUnger, do you know anything about this? And do you have any ideas on how we should handle the migration? Tmv (talk) 17:02, 6 June 2026 (UTC)
- I'm pretty sure there's not. This thread is my feeble attempt. ―Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 18:35, 6 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Tmv: I do not know anything about this. And as I wrote elsewhere I however understand that the Wikivoyage feature is not available in the Incubator because it would function not only for Wikivoyage but also for all other non-Wikivoyage sub-wikis. --RolandUnger (talk) 06:32, 7 June 2026 (UTC)

- To be honest, I can't recall any previous conversations about it. The cause of the problem is also not very clear. Wherein is Toolforge used? What prevents such a usage? We can't approach the solution of the problem before we actually understand it.
- My general understanding is that one has to group individual points from a Wikivoyage article for displaying them on a map. This grouping can happen externally (as it is done now? but this is only my guess...), within Kartographer, or through some module/JS-script in Wikivoyage. Are the developers saying that the Wikivoyage-based solution is the only option now? Are we explicitly advised to go for such a solution, regardless of any potential issues with page loading that it may cause? This is not very clear either. --Alexander (talk) 09:50, 7 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Dereckson, @Yurik Do you have any comments on this. Adithyak1997 (talk) 21:11, 13 June 2026 (UTC)
Bot to flag dead links
[edit]Have there been any efforts to create bots to flag dead/usurped urls? (edited) Superb Owl (talk) 16:36, 26 August 2026 (UTC)
- I haven't heard of these discussions, however I do see how this could work: the bot visits the website to check if it is dead, and then tag the external link as dead (possibly also notify page watchers too). If we go by the idea of AI agents, this could also include suggesting new websites to add to the Wikivoyage article.
- Of course, this could be done as a normal bot without the "AI" part, and also, most people will think of LLMs when they hear AI (and not other forms such as machine learning) and we certainly do not want LLM generated content in any of the Wikimedia projects! - I like the directions it could take like suggesting a new link, but definitely would want to first focus only on the simplest part of it, which would be flagging urls that will cause a bad experience for the user (dead/usurped/etc). A bot like this would also be useful for Wikipedia as well and have not yet found a similar initiative/discussion there either. I have created a community wishlist wish here (updated) Superb Owl (talk) 00:24, 29 September 2026 (UTC)
