Initial Commit
About
Hi there and welcome to Initial Commit! My name is Jacob Stopak and I'm a self-taught programmer/developer/hacker who started learning Python around 2002. Like many kids, I first played around with making games with tools like Pygame. Eventually this evolved into learning to use the Linux command-line, learning Git, and web development frameworks such as Spring Boot. Currently, I'm self-employed as a software consultant / independent contractor and I run this website as a side-gig, until it can become my main gig :)
Who
Jacob Stopak
I am fascinated by Git and version control, and want to open other devs' eyes to how cool they are. To do this, I focus on building visual Git tools and resources that resonate with regular humans. I created git-sim and Devlands, and wrote the Decoding Git guidebook for developers. I also love attending Git related conferences and events, which I speak at sometimes.
What this is
Initial Commit is where you learn Git by seeing it. Everything here is drawn by git-sim, so instead of memorizing commands, you watch what each one does to a real repository.
- Look up any Git command and watch it run in the Animated Git Cheat Sheet
- Learn Git step by step with free, hands-on lessons
- See what a command will do to your own repo before you run it
- Everything is free. The books and the store help keep it that way.
Explore
The Animated Git Cheat Sheet
Every common Git command, drawn by git-sim on a real repository, with how risky it is and how to undo it.
Learn
Hands-on Git lessons
Build a repository from scratch, one level at a time, and watch every command play out until it clicks.
Develop
Tools for your own repos
git-sim shows what a command will do before you run it, git-dummy builds repos to practice on, and Devlands turns your code into a 3D world.
Read
Articles and guidebooks
Hundreds of articles on Git, Python, Java and the web, and guidebooks that read the original code of Git and Bitcoin line by line.
