I think that using AI in open source is often an expression of maintainer's loneliness, and isn't all that different from using chatgpt in place of social interactions.

People say open source is a communal activity (often brought up in anti-AI arguments) but for many solo maintainers it never worked that way.

The mastodon 5.0 redesign looks good, but I wonder if it comes too late and the userbase that would like it is long gone. Back when people were moving over from Twitter there was real opportunity to turn the vibe around in this place.

Something that breaks my heart is that ~half of the new gadgets I see referenced in #DEFCON talks are pointing to *entirely* AI-generated GitHub repos.

If your README is full of slop and was not written with a clear target audience in mind, maybe it's time to take a step back and ask yourself if you're here to solve a problem or to win a war over GitHub stars and attention.

> if I were a textiles worker in 1810s England, I would not be telling my friends and loved ones “it’s time to fight, let’s go smash up the factories for Ned Ludd!“. I would be telling them that this was the most dangerous time in the industry (perhaps ever), and that they ought to be very damn careful so they don’t get shot, or arrested, or hanged. If I then went and told a few hundred thousand strangers the opposite, I would be a hypocrite.

It seems that Google Play is no longer auto-updating apps correctly and reliably in the background.

A lot of apps push me to update them in the play store, i go in there, indeed there's a new update available since months and auto-update is enabled.

Maybe it's specific to my device, you never know.

If nothing else, I think there's going to be a lot of interesting sandboxing tech coming out of the AI bubble. I hope Forgejo will then be pragmatic enough to try and salvage that for its own CI runners, eventually. Their current state is not great at all.

what public code forges exist besides #codeberg that are worth knowing? any differentiators? I'm mainly aware of git.disroot.org, i.e. paid hosting for git.

EDIT: specifically mean forgejo/gitea. srht is out of scope here.

I wish more people had that kind of take when left-pad happened. The maintainer there got _dunked on_ for deleting his package, by many of the same people who now celebrate this prompt injection. It's about the same issue ("suppy chains"), but now that LLMs are involved it's suddenly more righteous to do this.
