Backup and Disaster Recovery (DR) Strategy — AWS & Kubernetes

Ye README is tarah likha gaya hai ke agar aap Disaster Recovery (DR) mein bilkul naye (beginner) ho, phir bhi har concept step-by-step samajh aa jaye. Har section mein "kya hai" aur "kyun zaroori hai" dono explain kiya gaya hai.

1. Ye Project kis liye hai (Problem Statement)

Cloud environments mein kayi cheezein galat ho sakti hain:

  • Hardware fail ho sakta hai
  • Network outage aa sakta hai
  • Data corrupt ho sakta hai
  • Koi galti se data delete kar sakta hai
  • Poora region hi down ho sakta hai (rare, lekin possible)

Agar in sab situations ke liye pehle se plan na ho, to system lambe waqt ke liye down reh sakta hai aur important data hamesha ke liye kho sakta hai — jo business ke liye bohot nuksaan deh hai.

Isliye hume ek Disaster Recovery (DR) Strategy chahiye — yani ek pehle se socha hua plan ke agar kuch bhi ghalat ho jaye, to hum jaldi se system ko wapas chala saken, bina zyada data khoye.

2. Do Sab Se Zaroori Concepts: RTO aur RPO

DR samajhne ke liye ye 2 terms sab se zaroori hain:

Term Full Form Matlab Example
RTO Recovery Time Objective System kitni der mein wapas chalna chahiye 1–4 ghante critical apps ke liye
RPO Recovery Point Objective Kitna data khona acceptable hai RDS ke liye 15 minute, DynamoDB ke liye 1 ghanta

Aasan misaal se samjho:

  • Agar RTO = 1 hour hai, to iska matlab hai ke jab bhi kuch fail ho, aapko 1 ghante ke andar system wapas chalana hai.
  • Agar RPO = 15 minutes hai, to iska matlab hai ke aap sirf pichle 15 minute ka data khone ka risk le sakte hain, usse zyada nahi.

Ye dono values hi decide karti hain ke:

  • Backup kitni baar lena hai
  • Replication kaise setup karni hai
  • Failover plan kaisa hona chahiye

3. Cross-Region Replication kya hai?

Cross-Region Replication ka matlab hai ke data automatically ek geographic region se dusre alag region mein copy ho jata hai (jaise alag countries/continents ke data centers).

📍 Misaal:

  • User ne North Virginia region mein ek file upload ki
  • Wahi file automatically Ireland region mein bhi copy ho gayi

Ye copying automatic hoti hai — manually kuch nahi karna padta.

Kyun zaroori hai? Agar kabhi poora ek region hi down ho jaye (jo rare hai lekin ho sakta hai), to dusre region mein aapka data safe rehta hai aur wahan se system chala sakte hain.

4. Component-wise Backup Strategy

Har AWS service ka apna alag backup tareeqa hota hai:

Component Backup Method Frequency / Retention Notes
RDS (MySQL) Automated + manual snapshots Daily automated, 7–30 days retain; changes se pehle manual bhi lo Multi-AZ enable karo failover ke liye
DynamoDB On-demand + PITR (Point-in-Time Recovery) Continuous, 35 din tak Near-zero downtime
EC2 Instances AMI / EBS snapshots Daily, 7–30 days retain OS + app configs dono include karo
S3 Buckets Versioning + Cross-Region Replication (CRR) Continuous Accidental deletion aur region outage se bachata hai
Kubernetes Etcd snapshots + namespace config backups Daily / upgrades se pehle S3 mein versioning ke saath store karo
Terraform State S3 + DynamoDB locking Continuous IaC state ko protect karta hai

5. Disaster Recovery Strategy — Components

5.1 Multi-AZ Deployment

  • RDS Multi-AZ: Automatic failover milta hai
  • EC2 + Kubernetes nodes ko multiple AZs mein deploy karo
  • Faida: Agar ek AZ fail ho jaye, to system automatically doosri AZ par chalta rehta hai

5.2 Cross-Region Replication

  • RDS ke liye optional cross-region read replicas
  • S3 ke liye CRR (Cross-Region Replication) critical buckets ke liye
  • Terraform state ko bhi ek secondary region mein backup kiya ja sakta hai

5.3 Kubernetes DR

  • Cluster ki state save karne ke liye etcd snapshots use karo
  • Manifests (YAML files) ko Git mein store karo (GitOps approach) — isse quickly redeploy ho sakta hai
  • Agar zaroorat pare to ek secondary cluster dusre region mein bana kar active-passive DR setup kar sakte ho

5.4 Restore Procedures (Har resource ka apna restore tareeqa)

Resource Restore Method
RDS Snapshot restore ya PITR use karo
DynamoDB PITR se specific timestamp par restore karo
S3 CRR bucket se versioned objects restore karo
EC2 AMI snapshot se launch karo
Kubernetes Git manifests reapply karo, etcd snapshot restore karo

6. Automation & Testing

  • AWS Backup use karo RDS, DynamoDB, EFS, aur S3 ke liye — ye ek central service hai jo backups manage karti hai
  • Har 3–6 mahine baad DR drills schedule karo (test kar ke dekho ke DR plan actually kaam karta hai ya nahi)
  • CloudWatch + SNS se backups monitor karo aur alerts lo
  • Terraform/IaC deployments ko DR testing ke liye automate karo

7. Simplified Summary Flow

1. Primary Region → Sab resources chal rahe hain, daily backups ho rahe hain
2. Multi-AZ → High availability, automatic failover
3. Cross-Region → Critical backups secondary region mein bheje ja rahe hain
                       Replication
4. Restore → Snapshots, PITR, manifests, AMIs se recovery hoti hai
5. Testing → Regular DR drills se pata chalta hai plan kaam karta hai ya nahi

8. Disaster Recovery Drill — Step by Step (Practical Guide)

DR drill matlab practice run — actual disaster hone se pehle test kar ke dekhna ke recovery process kaam karta hai ya nahi.

8.1 Drill Plan Karna

  • Scope: EC2, Kubernetes, RDS, DynamoDB, S3, Terraform resources
  • Objectives: RTO (1 hour), RPO (15 min RDS ke liye, 1 hr DynamoDB ke liye)
  • Test Plan: Failover ke steps, apps verify karna, aur success criteria define karna

8.2 EC2 / Kubernetes DR Drill

Goal: Compute aur container workloads ka failover/restore test karna, bina production ko touch kiye.

Steps:

  1. Production Environment Clone karo Terraform/CloudFormation se production ki copy ek dusre AZ ya region mein banao — EC2, VPC, subnets, security groups, load balancers, Kubernetes cluster sab kuch.

  2. Kubernetes Cluster State Restore karo Etcd snapshots se cluster ki metadata (pods, deployments, services, configmaps) restore karo:

    etcdctl snapshot restore backup.db --name new-cluster \
      --initial-cluster new-cluster=https://127.0.0.1:2380
  3. Applications Redeploy karo (GitOps) Git mein stored manifests (YAML files) apply karo:

    kubectl apply -f ./manifests/
  4. Functionality Verify karo

    kubectl get pods -n <namespace>

Application endpoints aur logs check karo taake pata chale sab theek chal raha hai.

Key Note: Ye sab ek separate DR environment mein hota hai, taake production par koi asar na pare.

8.3 RDS Disaster Recovery Drill

Goal: Kam se kam downtime ke saath database restore karna test karna.

Steps:

  1. Snapshot se Restore karo

    aws rds restore-db-instance-from-db-snapshot \
      --db-instance-identifier test-rds \
      --db-snapshot-identifier mydb-snapshot
  2. Cross-Region Read Replica (agar exist karti ho) Replica ko standalone database mein promote karo failover simulate karne ke liye:

    aws rds promote-read-replica --db-instance-identifier my-rds-replica
  3. Data Integrity Verify karo

    mysql -h <endpoint> -u <user> -p

Critical tables, latest transactions, aur data consistency check karo.

Key Note: Ye confirm karta hai ke aapka RPO achievable hai, bina production ko affect kiye.

8.4 DynamoDB Disaster Recovery Drill

Goal: PITR (Point-in-Time Recovery) se table ko pichli state mein restore karna.

Steps:

  1. PITR Enable karo

    aws dynamodb update-continuous-backups \
      --table-name Orders \
      --point-in-time-recovery-specification PointInTimeRecoveryEnabled=true
  2. Specific Timestamp par Restore karo

    aws dynamodb restore-table-to-point-in-time \
      --source-table-name Orders \
      --target-table-name Orders-DR-Test \
      --restore-date-time 2026-01-16T06:00:00Z
  3. Consistency Verify karo Restored table ko production ya pichle snapshot se compare karo, aur read/write operations test karo.

Key Note: Ye NoSQL workloads ke liye data protection confirm karta hai.

8.5 S3 Disaster Recovery Drill

Goal: Critical objects aur cross-region replication ka restore test karna.

Steps:

  1. Versioned Objects Restore karo Versioning enable karo:

    aws s3api put-bucket-versioning --bucket mybucket --versioning-configuration Status=Enabled

    Pichla version restore karo:

    aws s3api get-object --bucket mybucket --key file.txt \
      --version-id <version-id> restored_file.txt
  2. Cross-Region Replication (CRR) Verify karo

    aws s3api list-objects --bucket mybucket-dr

Object count aur timestamps primary bucket se match karne chahiye.

Key Note: Ye accidental deletion ya regional failure se protect karta hai.

8.6 Terraform Disaster Recovery Drill

Goal: DR region mein resources ko automatically redeploy karna test karna.

Steps:

  1. Remote State Configure karo

    backend "s3" {
      bucket         = "my-terraform-state"
      key            = "prod/terraform.tfstate"
      region         = "us-east-1"
      dynamodb_table = "terraform-locks"
    }
  2. DR Region mein Test Stack Apply karo

    terraform init -backend-config="bucket=my-dr-state"
    terraform plan
    terraform apply -auto-approve
  3. Resources Verify karo Ensure karo ke EC2 instances, databases, aur networking sab sahi se provision hue hain. Connectivity aur functionality test karo.

Key Note: Ye confirm karta hai ke infrastructure jaldi se recreate ho sakti hai, human error kam ho jata hai automation ki wajah se.

9. DR Drills Ko Fully Automate Kaise Karein

Manually har baar drill chalana time-consuming hai. Isliye AWS Step Functions, Lambda, CloudWatch Events/EventBridge, aur SNS use kar ke poora process automate kiya ja sakta hai.

9.1 Step Functions / Lambda — End-to-End Automation

Workflow Example:

  1. Lambda trigger hota hai → DR drill start
  2. RDS snapshot restore hota hai (Lambda calls restore-db-instance-from-snapshot)
  3. EC2 / Kubernetes nodes launch hote hain (Terraform/CloudFormation)
  4. Kubernetes manifests restore hote hain (GitOps deployment)
  5. Traffic temporarily redirect hota hai (optional — Load Balancer / Route53 update)
  6. Smoke tests run hote hain (Lambda scripts se services verify hoti hain)

Result: Poori DR drill minimal manual intervention ke saath automate ho jati hai.

9.2 CloudWatch Events / EventBridge — Scheduling

  1. Ek EventBridge rule banao (jaise: "har 6 mahine baad Lambda trigger karo")
  2. EventBridge Step Function workflow ko invoke karta hai
  3. Drill DR/test region mein automatically execute ho jati hai

9.3 SNS Notifications — Team ko Alert Karna

  1. SNS topic configure karo DR drill notifications ke liye
  2. Team ke emails, Slack, ya SMS subscribe karo
  3. Step Functions integrate karo messages publish karne ke liye:
    • "Drill started"
    • "Drill succeeded"
    • "Drill failed" (error logs ke saath)

Result: Team ko manual monitoring ki zaroorat nahi — sab kuch automatically pata chal jata hai.

10. Automated DR Drills ke Faide

  • RTO aur RPO validate ho kar downtime risk kam hota hai
  • Backup, replication, ya deployment mein gaps jaldi pata chal jate hain
  • Team ki readiness aur compliance ensure hoti hai
  • Isolated test environments mein safely repeat kiya ja sakta hai

11. Test & Validate

  • DR environment mein apps ko smoke test karo
  • RDS aur DynamoDB data consistency verify karo
  • S3 object access aur replication validate karo
  • RTO, RPO, aur koi bhi gaps/issues document karo

12. Review & Improve

  • Jo seekha wo document karo aur DR plan update karo
  • Backup frequency, replication, aur automation ko objectives ke mutabiq adjust karo
  • Audits ke liye compliance logs maintain karo

13. Outcomes (In steps follow karne ke baad kya milega)

  • Incidents ke dauran downtime aur data loss kam hoga
  • Automated failover aur IaC provisioning se recovery tezz hogi
  • Periodic testing se DR readiness par confidence barhega
  • SOC2 aur PCI DSS jaise industry standards ke saath compliance hogi

14. Conclusion

Ek achi tarah structured Disaster Recovery strategy cloud environments mein business continuity ensure karti hai — RTO/RPO define kar ke, component-specific backups implement kar ke, multi-AZ aur cross-region failover deploy kar ke, aur DR drills ke liye automation use kar ke. Regular testing aur continuous improvement hi hai jo readiness maintain karta hai, downtime minimize karta hai, aur production environment mein critical data ko protect karta hai.

15. Key Principles (Yaad rakhne wali baatein)

  • Sab backups ko encrypt karo (KMS-managed)
  • Jahan tak ho sake DR processes ko automate karo
  • Har resource ke liye clear RTO aur RPO define karo
  • DR procedures ko regularly test karo taake gaps identify aur fix ho sakein

16. Tips

  • DR drills hamesha ek separate, isolated environment mein karo — taake production affect na ho
  • Jitna ho sake automate karo: Terraform + AWS Backup + Step Functions + Lambda
  • Compliance (SOC2, PCI DSS) ke liye hamesha checklist aur logs maintain karo
