A minimal Python package for Australian public holidays — a fork of the Vacanza holidays library trimmed to Australia only.
No external dependencies. Drop the holidays/ directory straight into your project or Lambda function.
Copy the holidays/ directory alongside your code — no pip install needed:
lambda_function.py
holidays/ ← this repo's holidays/ directory
import holidays
# All Australian national holidays
au = holidays.AU(years=2025)
# State/territory-specific holidays
nsw = holidays.AU(subdiv="NSW", years=2025)
vic = holidays.AU(subdiv="VIC", years=2025)
# Factory function
au = holidays.country_holidays("AU", years=2025)
# Check a date
from datetime import date
date(2025, 1, 1) in au # True — New Year's Day
# List supported countries (only AU in this fork)
holidays.list_supported_countries()Supported subdivisions: ACT, NSW, NT, QLD, SA, TAS, VIC, WA.
The upstream vacanza/holidays supports 100+ countries and requires python-dateutil. This fork strips everything except Australia and inlines the required dateutil subset, so there are zero runtime dependencies.
For full multi-country support, use the original package:
pip install holidaysThis package is derived from vacanza/holidays, created and maintained by the Vacanza Team and individual contributors. Original authors include:
