Description

Adds a post-event survey for DEF CON 34, so we can find out how people actually ran Meshtastic at the event and whether shipping custom event firmware was worth it.

During the event, attendees split into at least three groups: those who flashed the event firmware, those who kept stock firmware but applied the event LoRa settings and channels by hand, and those who ran plain LongFast. We have no data on the relative size of those groups, or on whether the problems people hit correlate with which group they were in. This survey closes that gap ahead of DEF CON 35 planning.

Where it appears

Rendered only when both are true:

  • the resolved event edition is DEFCON (eventMode.eventTag === 'DEFCON', via the existing plugins/eventMode.client.ts host resolution)
  • SURVEY_WEBHOOK_URL is configured

Hamvention, Open Sauce, FAB26, Burning Man and the plain flasher are all unaffected regardless of configuration.

A banner sits under the logo on the DEF CON flasher; clicking it swaps the flasher body for the survey at ?survey=1, with pushState so the link is shareable and Back works. This follows the existing ?device= / ?event= query-param convention rather than introducing pages/, which keeps app.vue's structure and its ?device= preselect and Flowbite wiring untouched.

Preview locally with ?event=DEFCON&survey=1.

Implementation

  • components/survey/schema.ts is the single source of truth: 32 questions across 8 sections, option codes, and branch rules. Branch rules are a small serializable AST rather than predicates, so the backend can evaluate the identical logic.
  • Device question is generated from public/data/hardware-list.json by scripts/gen-device-options.ts, offering all 101 boards with artwork and vendor filters. Codes are platformioTarget values, so answers join against flasher and firmware data. Ordering puts the devices the Android app actually saw at the event first, then boards with artwork, then the rest; boards whose artwork is missing from public/img/devices fall back to the placeholder rather than rendering broken.
  • appscript/survey/ holds the Apps Script backend, separate from the Alphanaut feedback backend in appscript/Code.gs. It appends one row per response to a Sheet, with a boolean column per multi-select option so the data pivots without string parsing. Schema.gs is generated from schema.ts so client and server cannot disagree about what a valid submission looks like.

Privacy

Anonymous by design: no name, no email address, no sign-in, and Apps Script cannot see client IPs. An optional node ID field is offered with a stated reason and is treated as untrusted.

Anti-abuse

Layered, all enforced server-side:

  • Cloudflare Turnstile, verified via siteverify
  • Honeypot field and a minimum fill time
  • Strict allowlist validation of every coded answer, plus length and payload caps
  • Rejection of answers to questions the respondent was never shown, and of submissions carrying a screened-out answer
  • LockService around the append so concurrent submissions cannot tear a row

Type of Change

  • New feature

Testing

  • utils/surveySchema.test.ts — schema integrity, branch-rule references, and branch lengths per respondent
  • utils/surveyBackend.test.ts — loads the real .gs files into Node with stubbed Google services and exercises the validation path, including tamper cases
  • 207 tests pass, including all pre-existing suites
  • pnpm run lint clean; pnpm run build succeeds

Configuration required before this does anything

Variable Value
SURVEY_WEBHOOK_URL Apps Script /exec URL
TURNSTILE_SITE_KEY Cloudflare Turnstile site key (public)

The Turnstile secret lives only in Apps Script Script Properties. Deployment steps are in appscript/survey/README.md. With no SURVEY_WEBHOOK_URL set, the survey is inert.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added a DEF CON 34 survey accessible through a contextual banner when configured.
    • Added branching questions, progress tracking, device selection, validation, and completion states.
    • Added anonymous submissions with spam protection, privacy messaging, and clear success or error feedback.
    • Added responsive layouts and light/dark device artwork support.
  • Documentation

    • Added setup, deployment, testing, troubleshooting, and survey data guidance.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for validation, branching, security protections, submissions, and schema integrity.

Collects how attendees actually ran Meshtastic at DEF CON 34, so we can
tell whether the event firmware was worth shipping and how the three
setup cohorts compare: event firmware, stock firmware with the event
LoRa settings and channels applied by hand, and plain LongFast.

Shown only when the resolved event edition is DEFCON and a webhook URL
is configured, so Hamvention, Open Sauce, FAB26, Burning Man and the
plain flasher are unaffected. Mounted at ?survey=1 rather than a new
route, matching the existing ?device= and ?event= conventions and
leaving app.vue's structure intact.

- 32 questions across 8 sections; branching keeps a respondent to ~20
- Device question is generated from public/data/hardware-list.json, so
all 101 boards are offered with artwork, ordered by the devices the
Android app actually saw at the event
- Apps Script backend appends one row per response to a Sheet, with a
boolean column per multi-select option so the data pivots directly
- Anonymous by design: no name, no email, no sign-in, no IP
- Cloudflare Turnstile, a honeypot, a minimum fill time, and a strict
server-side allowlist that also rejects answers to questions a
  respondent was never shown

How do review limits work?

CodeRabbit enforces per-developer PR review limits for each organization. Most developers receive the normal plan review availability.

For paid Pro and Pro+ PR reviews, CodeRabbit uses adaptive limits for sustained high-volume activity. When a developer's recent PR review activity reaches the 95th percentile or higher among CodeRabbit users, additional reviews become available more gradually as earlier reviews age out of the rolling window.

Mergeability Score: 🟡 Moderate · up to a8569

The survey feature is localized to DEF CON, but its generation scripts can still run under unsupported Node.js 22 versions and a new widget-display error does not follow the required localization path; these bounded issues should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge.

Add a CI check that the generated artifacts are current.

appscript/survey/Schema.gs is generated here and then pasted into the Apps Script project by hand. If a contributor edits components/survey/schema.ts without regenerating, the server allowlist stays stale and accepts or rejects the wrong option codes.

Add a CI step that runs pnpm run survey:generate and fails when git diff --exit-code reports changes. This catches drift in the repository, and the SCHEMA_VERSION gate then covers the deploy step.

Based on learnings: "Use pnpm as the package manager, run the app with pnpm dev, verify UI changes in a browser, and run unit tests with pnpm test:run."

Export isAnswered instead of duplicating it.

components/survey/useSurveyState.ts lines 67-72 contain a byte-identical copy of this function. The two copies define "answered" for visibility rules and for required-field validation. If one changes, branching and validation disagree silently.

User-visible survey text bypasses useI18n. The coding guidelines require all user-visible text to pass through useI18n / $t('key'). The survey introduces two sets of hardcoded English strings: the schema copy and the submission error messages. The schema header documents a deliberate exemption; the error strings have no stated exemption.

  • components/survey/schema.ts#L9-L16: confirm the English-only exemption for survey prompts, help text, and option labels, and record it in appscript/survey/README.md so the pattern is not copied into permanent UI code.
  • utils/surveySubmit.ts#L55-L89: return stable keys such as survey.error.network instead of English sentences, and translate them in the consuming component.

As per coding guidelines: "All user-visible text must go through useI18n / $t('key'); do not hardcode strings in templates or scripts."

Security:
- Fail closed when TURNSTILE_SECRET is missing. Accepting every
submission on a config error let bots through while the rows looked
indistinguishable from real ones. Bypassing now needs an explicit
ALLOW_INSECURE_TURNSTILE_BYPASS property, so it cannot happen by
  omission.
- Escape cells beginning with = + - @ tab or CR before appendRow.
appendRow uses user-entered semantics, so a free-text answer could
otherwise be evaluated as a formula when the sheet is opened.

Correctness:
- closeSurvey pops the entry openSurvey pushed instead of pushing a
second one, so Back no longer re-opens the survey.
- Validate the final section before submitting, so a blank required
answer shows its own error rather than surfacing a backend rejection
  and burning a Turnstile token.
- Keep selected devices visible when a search or vendor filter would
  otherwise hide them.
- Disambiguate duplicate device labels: both Heltec MeshPocket variants
rendered identically, making the two codes uninterpretable. The
generator now fails if any label is still duplicated.
- Device count in the search placeholder comes from the data.

Stability and hygiene:
- Remove the popstate listener on unmount.
- Clear the cached Turnstile script promise on load failure, so one
transient failure no longer poisons every later mount.
- Report an error when the Turnstile widget cannot render, instead of
asking for a spam check with no widget to complete.
- Move .survey-error to the shared stylesheet using the theme error
token rather than a hex literal duplicated across two components.
- Correct the generated banner: codes are platformioTarget, not
hwModelSlug. Correct the SURVEY_WEBHOOK_URL name in the submit error
and the generator path in the eslint comment. Document that the
generators need Node 22.6+ while CI pins Node 20.

Adds regression tests for formula escaping, the fail-closed policy, and
device label uniqueness.

The generators are TypeScript run directly via Node's type stripping,
which needs 22.6+. CI pins Node 20, so a contributor who has not
switched locally hits a syntax error pointing at a type annotation,
which reads like a broken script rather than a toolchain mismatch.

The pnpm scripts now check first and say what is wrong. Not an engines
field: the app itself builds fine on Node 20, and constraining the whole
package would flag every install.

The previous guard used >= 22.6, but 22.6 only introduced type
stripping behind --experimental-strip-types; it was unflagged in
22.18.0, and separately in 23.6.0 for the 23.x line. The generators run
flagless, so the guard passed on 22.6-22.17 and 23.0-23.5 while
`node script.ts` still failed — exactly the confusing syntax error the
guard exists to prevent.

process.features.typescript is the precise signal: 'strip' or
'transform' when TypeScript runs without a flag, false when it does not,
and undefined on older Node. Verified in both directions.
