What

Configures automated dependency maintenance and advanced static security analysis:

  1. Dependabot (.github/dependabot.yml):

    • pm: Weekly scheduled vulnerability and dependency updates with automated grouping (\minor-and-patch, \dev-dependencies) and commit prefix \chore(deps):.
    • \github-actions: Weekly maintenance of GitHub Action workflow versions with grouping and commit prefix \ci(actions):.
  2. CodeQL Advanced Security Analysis (.github/workflows/codeql.yml):
    • Automated CodeQL static code analyzer targeting \javascript-typescript.
    • Running \security-extended\ and \security-and-quality\ query suites.
    • Least-privilege token permissions (\security-events: write, \contents: read, \ctions: read).
    • Triggered on PRs, pushes to \main, and weekly cron schedules with SARIF export to GitHub Code Scanning.
  3. README Badge:
    • Added live status badge for CodeQL security scanning.

Why

Ensures automated dependency health and automated deep code security vulnerability analysis.

Testing

  • Verified YAML syntax.
  • Verified workflow trigger matrix.

Changes

Dependency automation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dependabot update policies
.github/dependabot.yml
Dependabot checks npm and GitHub Actions dependencies weekly. It groups updates and sets pull-request limits, labels, target branches, and commit-message prefixes.

CodeQL security analysis

Layer / File(s) Summary
CodeQL workflow and status badge
.github/workflows/codeql.yml, README.md
The workflow runs on pushes, pull requests, a weekly schedule, and manual dispatch. It analyzes JavaScript and TypeScript with extended query suites and scoped permissions. The README links to the workflow status.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5e963

The PR adds automated CodeQL scanning, but the workflow still references Action v3, which is scheduled for deprecation in December 2026. The change is mergeable with explicit owner follow-up to migrate those references to v4.

GitHub CodeQL Action v4 latest major version Node.js 24 CodeQL Action v3 deprecation official

💡 Result:

As of August 23, 2026, the current major version of the GitHub CodeQL Action is v4 [1][2]. CodeQL Action v4 was introduced to upgrade the Action's runtime environment to Node.js 24 [3][4][5]. It is the recommended version for all users on GitHub.com and supported versions of GitHub Enterprise Server (GHES) [1][3][6]. Regarding the deprecation of CodeQL Action v3: - Official Status: CodeQL Action v3 is scheduled for official deprecation in December 2026 [3][7]. - Context: This timeline aligns with the deprecation of GitHub Enterprise Server (GHES) 3.19 [3]. - Impact: After the deprecation date, CodeQL Action v3 will no longer receive updates, and new CodeQL analysis capabilities will be exclusive to CodeQL Action v4 [3]. - Action Required: Users currently referencing v3 in their workflow files should migrate to v4 (e.g., updating github/codeql-action/init@v3 to github/codeql-action/init@v4) [3][6]. For users on older versions of GitHub Enterprise Server: - GHES 3.20 and newer ship with CodeQL Action v4 included [3][6]. - For GHES 3.19, which supports the Node.js 24 runtime required by v4 but does not include the action by default, administrators should enable GitHub Connect to allow the appliance to download v4 [3][6]. Environments on versions older than GHES 3.19 do not support the Node.js 24 runtime and cannot run CodeQL Action v4 [3].
