"Open Source is the best way to stimulate creativity and ensure the performance, security, and maintainability of Thales' products and services." — Daniel Glazman, VP Software Technologies at Thales

🛡️ Open Source: building tomorrow, together

Open Source is more than a software development method: it's a movement built on collaboration, transparency, and sharing. By fostering collective innovation, it lets everyone contribute, learn, and improve projects used worldwide.

At Thales, this strategic approach accelerates innovation, strengthens security, and attracts top talent. Open Source Software & Hardware are major concerns for the Group, and this GitHub organization is where we foster collaboration with the communities that make it possible.

Our mindset is simple: Use → Contribute → Publish.

🏆 Recognized for it

On 10 December 2025, Thales received the "Best Open Source Strategy" award at the Open Source Experience trade show, presented by the CNLL (Conseil National du Logiciel Libre). It rewards five years of work by the Group's Technical Directorate: a structured transformation, mature internal processes, real impact in the Open Source community, and the commitment of teams across the company.

🌍 Why it matters to us

  • Security by transparency — open code can be audited by the community, enabling faster detection and correction of vulnerabilities. Essential for a company that places trust and security at the heart of its business.
  • Sovereignty & independence — reducing dependency on proprietary vendors, mastering our source code, and building on open standards.
  • Faster, better innovation — collaborative development accelerates the maturity of the building blocks we rely on, from cybersecurity to cloud-native infrastructure to embedded hardware.
  • Talent attraction & retention — engineers who contribute to Open Source stay engaged, keep their skills sharp, and take pride in work the whole world can see.
  • Inner Source as a bridge — the same open, collaborative practices applied inside Thales first, breaking silos between entities before code is shared with the world.

🏗️ Open Source Hardware & RISC-V

Thales is a committed member of the RISC-V ecosystem, contributing to an open, royalty-free processor architecture that strengthens Europe's technological sovereignty in critical embedded systems — aerospace, space, automotive, rail, security, and defence. Our teams work on projects such as the CORE-V CVA6 processor developed by the OpenHW Group.

⚙️ How we govern it

Every Thales Open Source publication (sharing an internal asset) or contribution (fixing/improving an external project) goes through the same lightweight, structured process, reviewed by:

  • a manager, to check alignment with business interests;
  • a technical expert, to review code and architecture;
  • the Software Compliance team, to manage IP, licensing and export-control risk, and validate the license choice.

Once approved, the project is published here — the single entry point for all Thales Open Source assets.
