Use current locale for byte regular-expression matching - #9042
Conversation
Extract the Python 3.14-compatible LOCALE matching paths from RustPython#8954, keeping host callbacks outside the no_std engine and preserving the C-locale fallback. Existing canonical regex tests cover locale changes and compiled patterns. Keep expected-failure markers until patched native execution proves they are obsolete; omit duplicate snippet tests and Python 3.15 prefixmatch additions. The exact patched native interpreter passes the existing locale flag and compiled-pattern tests and unexpectedly passes locale caching. Remove only the obsolete expected-failure decorator; preserve all canonical assertions and platform skips. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model identifier unavailable

Summary
Extract the Python 3.14-compatible byte regular-expression LOCALE matching fixes from #8954.
Existing canonical regex tests cover this behavior; no duplicate snippet tests are added. The exact patched native interpreter unexpectedly passed test_locale_caching, so only its obsolete expected-failure decorator was removed. All canonical assertions and platform skips are preserved.
Validation
Before the executor reset, this exact commit passed the normal commit hooks, VM Clippy, and separate CAPI Clippy. CPython 3.14.7 passed the three selected canonical locale tests and a 39-case comparison matrix; the immutable RustPython baseline failed 13 matrix cases. These are reference/baseline results, not a claim of native runtime success for this head. After executor recovery, a fresh native build of the exact production commit succeeded. The existing test_locale_flag and test_locale_compiled passed; test_locale_caching unexpectedly passed. After removing only its obsolete decorator, all three canonical tests passed normally. Hosted cross-platform CI remains pending.
Remote recovery verified this commit's parent is current main (3af5f8a) and its production diff is limited to five Rust files, with one subsequent obsolete test decorator removed. No test assertions or expected-failure markers are weakened.
AI-assisted with OpenAI Codex. Draft pending platform validation.
