🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Apply the key check to property encoding.
_encode_filter_properties calls parse_filter_properties, not parse_filter_chain_item. A filter dictionary with an unsupported key can therefore pass property encoding even though the constructors now reject it. Route both entrypoints through the filter-specific key check. CPython uses one filter-specifier converter for both entrypoints. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Validate encoding and errors before checking for object.
If a caller passes str(encoding=123) or str(errors=123), py_new takes the missing-object branch and returns "". The previous typed argument binding rejected these values. Move both calls to str_new_str_arg before the match args.object, so every supplied value receives validation. CPython also validates these arguments before constructing the empty string. Why

| Function | Base (a403341) | Head (45c1a00) |
|---|---|---|
__memcpy_avx_unaligned_erms (self) |
138.2 µs, mostly called from _int_realloc (20 call paths) |
61.0 µs, almost none from _int_realloc |
malloc_consolidate (self) |
66.6 µs, triggered from _int_malloc |
38.7 µs, triggered from free |
_int_malloc (total) |
163.3 µs | 75.2 µs |
Parser functions (Lexer::next_token, parse_lhs_expression, parse_simple_statement, bump, …) cost about the same on both sides, and slightly more on head. Nearly all of the gain is in libc:
- Base:
reallocoften couldn't grow vectors in place, so it copied them to a new block. - Head: most of those reallocations grew in place.
Which case you get depends on the heap's state when the benchmark starts, not on parser code. That state varies because criterion runs every benchmark in one process. The benchmark files are also collected into a std::collections::HashMap (benches/execution.rs:127), which iterates in a random order, so the allocations made before this benchmark differ from run to run.
History on main
| Commit | Value |
|---|---|
| 4b6ad58 (rustix bump) | 1.666 ms |
| a403341 (base for this PR) | 1.883 ms |
| ef5c651 (wasi signal fix) | 1.748 ms |
| 0e67b82 (cc bump) | 1.874 ms |
| This PR (45c1a00) | 1.693 ms |
None of these commits change the parser, yet the value moves between 1.67 and 1.88 ms (about 13%). This PR's result falls inside that range. The base happened to be one of the slow runs, which is why the comparison shows +11%.
Takeaway: treat this result as noise. The PR has no real performance effect on parsing, and the other 61 benchmarks are unchanged. To make these results more stable, iterate the benchmark files in a fixed order (e.g. a BTreeMap). Running the parse_to_ast group in its own process would also stop earlier benchmarks from changing the heap state.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Do not count Flatten(None) as a positional parameter.
FromArgs::PARAMS defines Flatten(None) as contributing nothing. When it precedes a positional-or-keyword parameter, this increment shifts the parameter position. For example, one positional argument plus a keyword for that first parameter then evades the duplicate check and reaches a different binding error. Count PositionalOnly here, but leave Flatten(None) unchanged.

bind_for reports a keyword that fills a parameter already given by position before other binding errors, using the parameter list of the FromArgs type. getargs shares the message, str() drops its own check, and blake2b/blake2s name themselves in binding errors.
