Summary

nt::symlink probed the target with an unbounded Path::join. The
directory probe used by os.symlink is two WCHAR[MAX_PATH] buffers
and treats a join that does not fit as "not a directory". That
boundary is observable for an existing directory target.

This matches that bound, and adds the two other Win32 helpers that
still lived next to host_env in a consumer:

  • winapi::version_ex_triple() — GetVersionExW major/minor/build.
    Not get_version() (packed GetVersion() DWORD) and not
    get_windows_version() (overwrites the triple with kernel32's file
    version).
  • nt::set_file_times() — CreateFileW(FILE_WRITE_ATTRIBUTES | FILE_FLAG_BACKUP_SEMANTICS) plus wrapping time_t_to_FILE_TIME
    arithmetic, so a second before 1970 is a positive tick count.

The Path arguments on nt::symlink stay for API stability; the
probe now reads the wide strings.

Test plan

  • CI (Windows)
  • consume symlink / getwindowsversion / utime against this rev

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for setting a file’s access and modification timestamps on Windows.
    • Added Windows version detection, including major, minor, and build numbers.
  • Improvements

    • Improved Windows symlink path handling with wide-character support and path-length validation.

nt::symlink's directory probe now uses two WCHAR[MAX_PATH]
buffers and treats an overflowing join as not a directory.
winapi::version_ex_triple exposes GetVersionExW. nt::set_file_times
opens with FILE_WRITE_ATTRIBUTES and writes wrapping FILETIMEs.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The Windows host environment now uses bounded wide-character symlink checks, provides file timestamp updates through SetFileTime, and exposes Windows version information through version_ex_triple.

Changes

Windows host environment

Layer / File(s) Summary
Symlink validation and file timestamps
crates/host_env/src/nt.rs
The symlink directory check now uses wide-character paths and MAX_PATH bounds. The new set_file_times function converts timestamps to FILETIME values and applies them with SetFileTime.
OS version query
crates/host_env/src/winapi.rs
The new version_ex_triple function returns the Windows major, minor, and build numbers when GetVersionExW succeeds.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3fde5

Some Windows timestamp updates may fail while files are open, and a root-relative symlink can use the wrong link type. Both fixes are localized, so merge risk is low.

Preserve the root separator in check_dir.

When dst is \link, rposition returns zero and &dst[..0] removes the root separator. The probe checks src relative to the current directory instead of \src. If \src is a directory and target_is_directory is false, CreateSymbolicLinkW receives the file-link flag and creates the wrong link type.

Keep the separator in parent and do not append a second separator.

Use compatible share flags when opening the file.

The Windows os.utime path reaches set_file_times, where CreateFileW uses share mode 0. If another handle has the file open, this call can fail with a sharing violation, even when that handle allows read, write, and delete sharing. Match chmod_follow and allow all three sharing modes.
