A fun way to come up with a business card:
It's a UNIX system! I know this!
- SGI System/MAME
- IRIX 5.3 (maybe 6.5). Emulate a SGI System. Performance notes below
On a modern system (Intel Core Ultra 9 185H), average performance is ~95-100% using the latest versions of MAME, and when performing simple tasks in the emulated environment. Obviously, average performance will vary depending on your system (it might be better, it might be worse).
- In the System Toolchest, go to User Manager:
- In the User Manager, double-click your user, then set the following information:
Clear out the Primary system name field so it doesn't appear in the business card.
- Save your changes, and either:
- Log off. At the login screen, hold Alt, double-click your user and log in, or
- Double-click your user again in the User Manager, then double-click the user icon on the top-left of the window, or
- Drag the user icon to your desktop and double-click it (Recommended)
After loading the business card on the login screen, the Indigo Magic User Environment may not load, causing you to restart the system. For a more error-proof solution, use the User Manager instead.
You can tell if the desktop is loading by looking at the cursor. Normally, it turns into an hourglass.
However, this sometimes works. When it does, the window frame will be rendered.
In my testing, the icon only appeared in the login screen.
Requirements:
- GIMP
- In GIMP, load a JPG/PNG with a 1:1 aspect ratio and export it with a
.iconextension. - Pass that .icon file to the SGI system. (With MAME, you'll need to create an ISO -- it will be mounted to /CDROM, and you can double-click the cdrom icon)
- Open your Home directory. Desktop Toolchest -> Home directory; or the user folder on your desktop
- Create a new folder called
.iconsand copy your.iconfile there aslogin.icon. For example:
- Log off. You should see your profile picture:
Yes, you can drag it to your desktop:
Then, you can double-click it to quickly open the business card.
To make a physical version of the business card:
- Open it
- Give its window focus. On IRIX, windows the mouse pointer is hovering on will be focused. Click the title bar to bring it to the front, if necessary
- Jump back to the host environment (Alt-Tab) and use your screenshot tool of preference to capture the entire window, including the frame (it's less fun if you only capture the contents of the window)
- Get rid of the cursor by painting its area with the same background color
- Print it. Then, I'll leave the arts and crafts up to you
