How to use Gemini in Google Forms
Last updated September 2026 · ~9 minute read
Short answer: open a new form on a computer, click Help me create a form, describe what you want, then Create. Since the rollout that began 24 July 2026, that prompt can also produce a quiz with correct answers and points already marked. The catch is eligibility: Google lists this for specific paid Workspace tiers and for consumer Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscriptions — a free @gmail.com account is not on any of Google's availability lists, and the feature is documented as desktop-only.
Most articles on this question skip the eligibility line, which is the only part that decides whether the steps below will work for you. So we have put it first, with the dates, and quoted Google's own wording — including the places where Google simply does not say.
Can you actually use this?
Google has shipped Gemini into Google Forms in stages, and each stage carries its own availability list. Here is every announcement, with its dates.
| Feature | Announced / rollout | UI label |
|---|---|---|
| Generate a form from a prompt | Announced 11 June 2025. Rapid Release from 11 June 2025; Scheduled Release from 7 July 2025. | Help me create |
| Suggest new questions for an existing form | Announced 6 August 2025. Rapid Release from 5 August 2025; Scheduled Release from 19 August 2025. | Suggest questions |
| More languages for form creation and question suggestions | 1 April 2026, listed as available now in both release tracks. | — |
| Generate a quiz, with answers marked and points assigned | Posted 30 July 2026. Rapid Release from 24 July 2026; Scheduled Release from 5 August 2026. Both gradual, up to 15 days for feature visibility. | Help me create |
Which accounts Google lists for quiz generation
The July 2026 quiz announcement gives its availability as, verbatim: Business: Business Standard, and Plus; Enterprise: Enterprise Standard, and Plus; Education: Education Plus; Consumer: Google AI, Pro, and Ultra; Education Add-ons: Google AI Pro for Education; Teaching and Learning.
Read carefully, that means:
| Account type | Status as of September 2026 |
|---|---|
| Workspace Business Standard / Business Plus | Listed |
| Workspace Enterprise Standard / Enterprise Plus | Listed |
| Workspace Education Plus | Listed |
| Education with the Google AI Pro for Education, or Teaching and Learning, add-on | Listed |
| Personal account with a paid Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra subscription (Google’s list says “Google AI, Pro, and Ultra”) | Listed under Consumer |
| Free personal @gmail.com, no Google AI subscription | Not listed. It appears on none of Google's availability lists for these features |
| Business Starter, Enterprise Starter, Education Fundamentals / Standard | Not listed in the July 2026 post |
| Google Workspace Individual | Not stated. The phrase does not appear on the announcement at all — we are not going to guess either way |
Two further conditions sit alongside the plan list. Google's help page for creating a form with Gemini says access needs an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan or membership of Google Workspace Experiments, which Google describes as a trusted tester program which allows you to try out new AI features and tells you to check whether it is available in your country. And for Workspace domains, the July 2026 post tells admins to turn on the default personalization setting in the Admin console for Gemini to appear in the side panel of Workspace apps — so on a managed account, your administrator can switch this off.
The quickest way to check: Google's own instruction is to open a form in Google Forms and look for Help me create a form. If the button is not there, you do not have it, and no setting inside Forms will summon it.
How to create a form with Gemini, step by step
- Open Google Forms in a desktop browser. Google's help page states the feature is currently available on desktop.
- Start a new form.
- Type your prompt into the window that appears when the form opens, or click Help me create a form in the toolbar. Shuffle cycles through suggested prompt tiles if you want a starting point.
- Write the prompt. Be specific about audience, length and question types.
- Click Create. If the draft is off, edit the prompt or click Recreate for an alternative.
- Click Create form to keep it, then edit the questions by hand.
For a quiz
Since the 24 July 2026 rollout, the same Help me create prompt makes quizzes: describe the quiz you want, and Google's help page states the result marks correct answers and assigns points, and can mix multiple-choice, checkbox, grid, short-answer and long-answer questions. The announcement also states the prompt can reference Google Drive files — Docs, Slides or PDFs — to use as sources for the quiz. If you want a quiz built by hand instead, see our guide on making a quiz on Google Forms.
For extra questions on a form you already have
The August 2025 feature is separate. Google's help page documents the labels Help me write a question and Suggest questions, and states the form needs a title and at least two questions before suggestions appear. It needs an eligible Workspace or Google AI plan, or Workspace Experiments, and Google documents it in English only, on a single-section form.
What Gemini in Forms still will not do
- No multiple sections. Google's help page lists multi-section forms as not yet supported; the question-generation page says single-section forms only.
- It replaces, rather than edits. Google notes that generating does not edit an existing form — generation replaces the current one.
- Desktop only, as documented. The form-creation help page says the feature is currently available on desktop, and the question-generation page gives its steps as On your computer. Mobile support is not stated anywhere we could find on Google's own pages, so we are not claiming it exists or that it does not.
- Language limits. The original 2025 launch was English-only. On 1 April 2026 Google expanded form creation by 21 further languages and question suggestions by 28. The question-generation help page still says English at the time of writing. Note what this is: drafting a new form in another language, not translating one you already have. Google Forms has no translate command at all, which is why translating a Google Form comes down to three manual approaches.
- Admin-controlled. On a Workspace domain the personalization setting gates it.
If your account is not on the list
This is the common case, and it is why most people arrive at this page: a free Google account, a phone in hand, and no Gemini button anywhere. Forms+ is an independent iPhone and iPad app built on the official Google Forms API, and it brings its own AI generator rather than borrowing Google's — so it does not depend on your Workspace tier.
What the app's own screens offer, described only as its interface labels them:
- Describe your form and Generate form — a prompt-to-form generator, with What are you making? presets including Survey, Quiz, Poll, RSVP, Registration, Order Form, Feedback, Application and Lead Gen.
- Controls for Number of Questions, Reading Level (Elementary through College), Tone (Formal, Friendly, Professional, Casual, Playful), Language, and a Cognitive Level (Bloom's) setting for quiz items.
- Start From a Document — Build a form from an existing paper form, photo, or PDF, via Scan a Document, Take Photo, Choose Photo or Choose File (PDF). You can also paste a website to build from.
- Ask AI to change anything… — refine the draft in plain English after it is generated, plus Regenerate.
- AI Suggestions — AI read your form and suggested more to add. Pick the ones you want.
- Improve this question… — the single-question counterpart to Google's Help me write a question, in the editor's tools menu under Review. Select a question first and it rewrites that one: the app shows the suggested title, and the replacement description and answer options where it proposes them, before you apply anything. On a quiz question that carries an answer key, or a choice that branches to another section, it applies the new wording only and leaves the options untouched, because reordering them would leave the key or the branch pointing at the wrong row. It is a PRO feature, and choosing it with nothing selected simply tells you to tap a question first.
- On the responses side: Ask AI (Ask questions about your responses in plain English). A second tool, AI Answer Themes, is built but not switched on in the shipping app — it sits behind a flag that is off by default, so it is not in the Responses tools sheet today and should not be counted on.
Publishing an AI-generated form into your own Google account is a PRO feature in the app; generating and previewing one is not. Forms+ is an independent app and is not made by Google.

Can I use Gemini in Google Forms with a free @gmail.com account?
Not according to Google's availability list. The July 2026 quiz announcement lists consumer access under Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscriptions, which are paid. A free personal Google account with no Google AI subscription does not appear on any of Google's availability lists for these features.
Which Google Workspace plans get Gemini in Google Forms?
The quiz-generation post of July 2026 lists Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Education Plus, and the Google AI Pro for Education and Teaching and Learning add-ons. Business Starter, Enterprise Starter and the lower Education tiers are not listed. Google Workspace Individual is not mentioned on that page at all, so its eligibility is not stated.
Can Gemini create a Google Forms quiz with an answer key?
Yes, on eligible accounts. Google's help page states that when a quiz is generated using Help me create, it will also mark correct answers and assign points, and that a quiz can have a mix of multiple-choice, checkbox, grid, short, and long-answer questions. Quiz generation reached Rapid Release domains on 24 July 2026 and Scheduled Release domains on 5 August 2026.
Can I use Gemini in Google Forms on my phone?
Google's help page for creating a form with Gemini states it is currently available on desktop, and the question-generation help page gives its steps On your computer, in English only. Mobile support is not stated. Forms+ on iPhone and iPad has its own AI form generator that runs on the phone and works on any Google account you can sign in with.
Can Gemini build a Google Form from a document or PDF?
Yes on eligible accounts. Google's help page states you can create forms from your Drive files, like Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and PDFs, and the July 2026 quiz announcement states a prompt can reference Google Drive files such as Docs, Slides or PDFs as sources for the quiz. The file has to be in Drive.
What is Google Workspace Experiments, and do I need it?
Google describes Workspace Experiments as a trusted tester program which allows you to try out new AI features, and tells you to check whether it is available in your country. Google's help page says creating a form with Gemini needs either an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan, or Workspace Experiments. The separate question-generation feature lists the same two routes.
