From Proto-Finnic *ümpärik (compare Estonian ümber, Ingrian ympäär, Livonian immõr, Veps ümbri, Votic ümperi), equivalent to lative ympär- +‎ -i, the root ultimately derived from Proto-Germanic *umbi.
