- What on earth happened to your face? You look like you've been wrestled to the ground by an agta from cooking over that firewood hearth all day.
- Panghilam-os didto, dong, kay gidumog na pod kas agta sa imong dinuwaan sa gawas.
- Go wash your face, boy, because you look like you've been mauled by an agta again from playing outside.
Usage notes
[edit]- In Philippine folklore, the agta is a tall, dark-skinned supernatural being of extraordinary size who lives in large trees (like balete trees), cliffs, or abandoned houses, often depicted smoking a massive cigar. Because the creature is associated with charcoal-black skin and wild surroundings, the idiom jokingly implies that if a person looks completely covered in soot or dirt, they must have just survived a physical wrestling match (dumog) with an agta.
- It is frequently used to tease children after they have been playing outside in the mud all day, mechanics covered in engine grease, or people who have just finished cooking over an open firewood hearth (pugon) and ended up with charcoal ash smeared all over their faces and clothes.
- While widely used as a playful or hyperbolic colloquialism in Visayan households, users should be aware that the term agta historically doubles as a name occasionally given to the Negrito indigenous peoples of the Philippines. Because the idiom equates the creature's appearance with dirtiness and untidiness, it carries racial undertones and can be considered stereotypical or derogatory toward actual indigenous communities.
