    Borrowed from Spanish esponja, from Old Spanish esponja, a semi-learned borrowing from Latin spongia, borrowed from Ancient Greek σπογγῐᾱ́ (spongĭā́), from σπόγγος (spóngos) + -ιά (-iá). See also funggus and onggo.
