Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from English Nigeria. The English name was formed from Niger (“Niger River”) and the placename-forming suffix -ia. Shaw proposed the name for the territories under British influence around the Niger River; it was subsequently applied to the British colony and, after independence in 1960, to the modern country.
The river name Niger is of uncertain origin. Store norske leksikon derives it from Tuareg Tuareg n'igherren (“flowing water; river”). Other etymologies have also been proposed, and the modern European spelling was probably influenced by Latin niger (“black”) rather than being derived from the Latin adjective.
The English suffix -ia (“placename-forming suffix”) is from Latin Latin -ia and Ancient Greek Ancient Greek -ία (-ía, “noun-forming suffix”) and -εια (-eia). Ancient Greek -ία (-ía) is ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *-i-eh₂.
Parallel international adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Nigeria, Danish Nigeria, Swedish Nigeria, German Nigeria, Dutch Nigeria and English Nigeria.
