Etymology

Borrowed from Arabic حَمَاس (ḥamās, literally “enthusiasm”), an acronym for حَرَكَة الْمُقَاوَمَة الْإِسْلَامِيَّة (ḥarakat al-muqāwama l-ʔislāmiyya, “Islamic Resistance Movement”).

Pronunciation

A few speakers replace /h/ with /x/ in this name to imitate the organization's Hebrew name חַמַאס.

Proper noun

Hamas

  1. A Palestinian Islamist militant group and political organization.
    • 2009 January 13, “'Never again,' says survivor”, in Toronto Star‎[1]:
Hamas knew there would be massive retaliations.
    • 2014 August 20, “Why Jews are worried [print version: International New York Times, 22 August 2014, p. 8]”, in The New York Times‎[2]:
[W]hen a Hamas spokesman recently stood by his statement that Jews used the blood of non-Jewish children for their matzos – one of the oldest anti-Semitic canards around – European elites were largely silent.
