Glyph origin

[edit]

A Korean-coined Han character (국자 (國字, gukja)). Ideogrammic compound (會意 / 会意): 水 (“water”) + 田 (“field”). The sound is obtained from similar 답 (沓, dap).

Glyph is attested on various records of Silla period, e.g. wooden slip excavated in 2019 at Gyeongsan, and Shōsōin Silla document, written on 8th century.
