Question about video games wiki articles in general

[edit]

Hey, I have a question, somewhat new to editing Wiki and don't know all the savoir-vivre here. I saw you edited a gaming page I was just looking at and thought you can be a person to ask. If I should write to my "patron" or whatever we call that person I got when signing up to Wiki, feel free to not to read my "ode" and redirect me :)

For various reasons (which I can explain, but don't have to, saving you time) I decided to make a huge mega compilation of released video games in xlsx. Don't laugh, that's just the beginning :) I started from 1997 (random, I know), got all the games mentionned on "year ... in video games" wiki pages, threw this in xls. Of course data is missing here and there, various people wrote those, huge amount of data, lacks coherence, normal thing. But as I complete my private base of games, I find some missing info or some discrepancies between pages about the produced and about the game itself etc. So. Is it ok I add missing info when it's on another wiki page and I confirm it otherwise? (or is there a procedure of "good enough confirmation of data"?) Is it ok if I make a table where there was a bullet list (for some game devs or producers, e.g. Hudson Soft)? Do I understand correctly we link only one of two if in infobox both producer and dev are the same company? I noticed it is in most places and I understand why it makes sense Can I link an "old" article (eg found by setting my search engine to "1998") and not do it through webarchive? Do you think making each "year... in video games" article similar? I mean, would it be ok for me to slowly make them have a table with same type of data? Like: title, year, platform, type (original or port), genre, dev, producer, sth, sth? Or would that be intrusive on my part (after all, a newbie in the editing)? Thanks in advance, sorry in advance, take care IddyIggy (talk) 18:43, 8 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi @IddyIggy
A huge list sounds like a long list or table. I would not put that all in a single article, but split it in an article, eg. per year. Don't make the list/table too big! I don't know if it is hard to convert an Excel worksheet to a Wikipedia table, but I guess there are tools to help you with that. Or else try with an AI chatbot.
If the information is not complete, you can start with creating draft articles in your sandbox, and promote them to an article on the main Wikipedia site. That not all information is complete yet, is not necessary a blocker. There are many articles with incomplete lists/tables and missing citations. You can add links/citations/references to old web pages, either on the original URL or the web archive Rofraja (talk) 18:22, 11 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
thank you! My gigantic table will be mine :) But while I compile it, I can make smaller, appropriate tables for various parts of Wiki. So if that's ok, I'll be happy to help within Wiki community - even if I'm just starting out. Thank you kindly for your openess and info! IddyIggy (talk) 19:48, 11 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Regarding your recent edits to Chulalongkorn when you modified the page, you introduced unknown parameters. Specifying |some_param=some_variable does not always mean that variable will display. The |some_param= needs to be defined in the template in order to work. You can look at the documentation for the template being used, but it is also helpful to use the preview button before saving an edit; this helps find any errors that have been made and ensures that the values added are displaying correctly. Below the edit box is a Show preview button. Pressing this will show what the page will look like without actually saving it. It is highly recommended that editors use this before saving. Note I have likely fixed the error by now so check the history of the page to see how it was fixed. If you have any questions of if I can help explain further, please let me know! You can also contact the help desk for assistance. Thank you. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:51, 11 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi User:Zackmann08
Good catch. I just wanted to restore a citation that my script had falsely removed. I guess I took the old version as the current version for the edit. I applied the same fix again on the latest version. Rofraja (talk) 17:13, 12 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ah makes sense! Keep up the good work. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 17:29, 12 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Manuka Oval

[edit]

Hello. I noticed your recent edit to fix a bare url citation appeared to break a chart in the section Manuka Oval#Australian Rules Football. I have no idea why! The template coding for the chart was not affected by your edit, yet the page displayed a red box with a "chart definition not found" error! I fixed it by reverting your edit and then manually adding the {{cite web}} template back in. I have no idea why that worked, and interestingly, when I view the old version it now displays correctly there as well.

You may be able to explain it with a better technical understanding than I, but either way I just thought I would flag it with you in case you wondered why I reverted your edit. Thanks! Dfadden (talk) 06:43, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

You can add to Pat Proctor's page, if you would:

He is running for Secretary of State in Kansas in the November 2026 election. He has been quoted as saying "women steal from men when they vote." ~2026-54172-43 (talk) 18:28, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
