Congratulations on the Dam

[edit]

Congratulations on Dam passing as an FA. It takes real persistence to bring multiple vital articles through this stage, especially when some like me get caught up with a single nomination.

I look forward to your next one — I'm sure there will be many more. Have a great day. Best, MSincccc (talk) 15:55, 17 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks ... it was a lot of work. And thanks for the FAC review on that article, and all the copy-editing. Noleander (talk) 16:53, 17 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Promotion of Dam

[edit]
Congratulations, Noleander! The article you nominated, Dam, has been promoted to featured status, recognizing it as one of the best articles on Wikipedia. The nomination discussion has been archived.
This is a rare accomplishment and you should be proud. If you would like, you may nominate it to appear on the Main Page as Today's featured article. Keep up the great work! Cheers, David Fuchs (talk) via FACBot (talk) 23:05, 17 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Articles for Creation backlog drive

[edit]

Hello Noleander:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive in August!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than a month of outstanding reviews from the current 3+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 August 2026 through 31 August 2026.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 5000 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:37, 19 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Re. Perceptions

[edit]

I've seen how much time and devotion it takes from users like you and Phlsph7 to take a vital article through FAC, and yet I found myself reflecting on this after attending a seminar where the speaker, along with our teachers, remarked that Wikipedia can be edited by anyone and therefore should not be trusted. If only they were aware of the internal processes and the amount of time—and back-and-forth—involved in FACs.

Moments like these do make me question the worth of the work we put in here. I look forward to your thoughts. Best, MSincccc (talk) 15:13, 22 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

WP used to have more accuracy problems before 2010, but it is a lot better these days. I can see why in certain professions (medical guidance or advanced science disciplines) it is considered "not trustworthy", but overall the quality is good. WP will always have its detractors, and as AI becomes more common, internet searches will start to return AI results (rather than links to WP articles). It doesn't bother me: like most WP article-creators, I write articles as a hobby, and I'll probably continue doing so even if AI starts to attract more readers that WP. I can see how an editor that was only concerned with readership statistics might give up editing if WP readership declines. But there will always be knowledge-enthusiasts that continue writing articles. Noleander (talk) 16:59, 22 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks — that's a helpful perspective and reassuring to hear. No worries here; I plan to keep writing on royalty and other topics here (and reviewing as well).
In any case, I can always vouch for the accuracy of your articles. Best, MSincccc (talk) 17:41, 22 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

The Special Barnstar
Thanks for getting the Nile river into FA status and its appearance on the main page! I always thought the Nile was only historically important in ancient Egypt, but now with this article, I have learnt so much more! (including the unfortunate politics surrounding it... RIP)

BTW, many of the articles that link from the Nile, such as List of river systems by length, Tributary, Headwaters, and Lake Victoria are poorly sourced, a stark contrast to the Nile article. As a suggestion for your "next big thing", perhaps you might want to start work on those articles?

Once again, congrats to your article getting into (T)FA! Hason-LEK-SIN ● Let’s chat! ● My contribs 09:52, 26 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Good article nominations RfC

[edit]

Hi Noleander,

There is an ongoing Request for Comment (RfC) at Wikipedia:Good article nominations/August 2026 RfC, which you may be interested in because in the past year, you have nominated or reviewed more than one good article nomination. This message has also been sent to all subscribers to the Good Article Gazette. The RfC contains many proposals (33 at the time of writing), which are split into the following categories: nominators, reviewers, reviews, volunteer roles, reviewing initiatives, and others. However, you are more than welcome to add any proposals of your own that you wish to put to the community.

By the end of September, all the proposals will have been closed by an uninvolved editor, either as a consensus for one of the options or with no consensus. At this point, editors will be invited again to develop these proposals into coherent policy and implement them.

Thank you for your contributions to the good articles project, and I look forward to your input! (in solidarity), JacobTheRox(talk|contributions) 16:03, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question about map

[edit]

Sorry, I'm a bit confused. I saw an issue with the map and tried to make one that would satisfy the criteria mentioned (non-western, demonstrated concept, included essential cartographic elements). I said I could fix it if needed, and then you changed the color/stripped the essential elements from it like scale bar, source, projection information, date created, map author, etc.. When I pointed the problems with this out, you replaced it entirely. This interaction has left me a bit stumped. I don't really understand what the issue was, or why it couldn't be use at all. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 20:12, 13 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

I apologize for damaging the map or offending you. That was not my intent.
I felt that the original map was self-promotional. In my opinion, it is inappropriate to include an editor's username within an article, in any form, even within an image. WP editors commonly create images in Commons (I've created several dozen) and their user names are visible in the Commons "Details" page, but never in a WP article (except in WP articles about WP).
I created a new version of the image myself because I did not want to bother you, and in the spirit of anyone can edit stuff. I did not change the image: I created a copy. I was careful to attribute the new image to you in the Commons page. I had no idea that you would be bothered by the changes, because the new map is nearly identical in content, colors, and layout of many other Commons maps. Again, I'm sorry for making those mistakes.
I replaced the map with the Biomass map to move forward. I don't think it serves any purpose to engage in a discussion about any map: if a map has issues, it is more expedient to simply use another map that does not have the shortcomings. There are many hundreds of maps in Commons that illustrate classification, and I'm sure we can find one that will work. Noleander (talk) 20:35, 13 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ah, didn't think of that as other essential elements (projection information, source, date of production, scale bar) were removed. Generally, I believe almost all maps on Wikipedia are inappropriate because, among other things, they do not include, at the very least, the username on the image themselves. This makes it harder to track down who to message if they leak into the real world without attribution. I've had at least one map I made published in some local Canadian paper, which is why cartographers sign their work with either their name or agency because it is essential for accountability. A username is pushing it, but at least it gives a thread for someone to email me with questions. There is the Mapmakers Mantra, among other sources, that agree on this. It is a fairly weird phenomena where we are all so concerned about not appearing self-promotional that we violate ethics. Thanks for letting me know. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 01:17, 14 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Not north up?

[edit]

Here's an oddity: File:Carthaginianempire.PNG Looks like it's about 15 degrees off-axis. I found this by accident. YouTube decided I wanted to watch some stupid series where the host asks people geography trivia questions. In this case, "What's the northern-most country in Africa?" which turns out to be Tunisia. So a few clicks later I found this map and WTF? RoySmith (talk) 22:54, 14 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

That map would give any cartographer apoplexy :-) Not even a north-up arrow. The Commons page says "Source: Own work (Original text: I created this work entirely by myself.)" I wonder if they rotated it to make more room in the lower-left corner for the legend? Noleander (talk) 22:58, 14 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Comment: Following your talk page from previous post. I believe user took a larger map in a conic projection and subset it to this extent. In a conic projection, there isn't a single "North" like you get in a cylindrical projection. I tend to include one North indicator along a single meridian as it is useful to orient the map, but other cartographers find this misleading and either don't include any indication of North, or insist on a Graticule. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 04:25, 15 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ah yes, if the original map was conic or polar with meridians converging at the top, that would explain it. Maybe north up was around Moscow? Noleander (talk) 15:42, 15 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
See the history of commons:File:Carthaginianempire.PNG, in particular the version of 14:03, 4 November 2011. RoySmith (talk) 15:49, 15 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Crazy. I think I've spent enough of my time (too much :-) studying that map! Noleander (talk) 16:18, 15 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Heh, another weird map. I'm guessing this is some sort of conic projection. Sure looks strange to see Turkey not horizontal. RoySmith (talk) 11:57, 28 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Map article and AFI

[edit]

Hey Noleander,

Thanks for getting another vital article into GA! However, I'm curious to know if you did this because it was listed as a vital article but not GA, or because it was listed at WP:Articles for improvement/Articles. For reference, here is the nomination of the Map article on AFI, which was nominated in March 2025. Or perhaps you don't even know the existence of AFI, and you worked on the article without knowing it was an AFI?

Also, out of curiosity, when did you start on this project of getting vital articles into GA and FA class? I also have plans to make vital articles related to trains GA class too (see the right navigation box below the images), and I hope to get some tips from you. Lowkey why does this sound like an interview for The Signpost...

Good luck on your "next big thing"! :D Hason-LEK-🇸🇬 ● 💬 ● 🧱 ● 🧪 00:22, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Hason-LEK-SIN - I selected the map article because I like maps, and I like working on important WP articles. I'm not very familiar with the WP:AFI process, and I was not aware that map was in the AFI category. My first level 3 Vital Article was π in 2012. The train article looks fun: I thought of working on it someday, but if you start on it, it is all yours :-) My tips are:
  • Before editing the article: spend lots of time obtaining and reading sources. Use WP:RX or Wikipedia:Resource support pilot (which will buy books and give them to you for free).
  • Start with simple, non-controversial changes, like improving the citation formats; improving MOS compliance; grammar, etc. This is important because train will have many editors that "watch" the page, and if you start with complex changes, you may upset other editors. So spend about 1 month making simple, positive improvements that every one agrees are good. The other editors will then begin to trust you.
  • Before making any big/complex change: post a note in the Talk page asking other editors for their input and ideas. Not only will you get some good ideas, but it may prevent other editors from coming along later and complaining that you made a change without first getting consensus.
  • Be prepared to compromise. Sometimes, another editor will want to implement an approach which you might disagree with. It is faster and easier to simply implement their concept (even if you disagree with it) provided it is consistent with the sources and sensible.
  • I have some FA tips (written for myself) at User:Noleander/FA_checklist
If you have any questions or want more tips, let me know. Noleander (talk) 00:45, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

New pages patrol September 2026 Backlog drive

[edit]
September 2026 Backlog Drive | New pages patrol
  • On 1 September 2026, a one-month backlog drive for new pages patrol will begin at a particularly important time for NPP.
  • The backlog has now passed 30,000 unreviewed articles, a level that has been described in current NPP discussions as exceptionally high and potentially difficult to overcome through normal reviewing alone. Backlog drives are one of the few measures that have historically produced a noticeable reduction in the backlog, so the participation of as many active patrollers as possible will matter this month.
  • If you can review during September, please make articles your priority. Every article that is reviewed is a meaningful reduction in the backlog. With the queue at its current size, even a relatively small increase in the number of articles each patroller reviews can add up to a substantial difference over the course of the month.
  • This is a hybrid drive, so redirect reviewing is still included. Redirects can be a useful way for newer patrollers to get comfortable with NPP and can help people build up to reviewing articles. However, the main goal of this drive is to tackle the article backlog, and experienced patrollers are particularly encouraged to spend as much of their available reviewing time on articles as they can.
  • Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled.
  • Each article review will earn 1 point, while each redirect review will earn 0.2 points.
  • Streak awards will be given out based on consistently hitting point thresholds for each week of the drive.
  • Barnstars will also be granted for re-reviewing articles previously reviewed by other patrollers during the drive.
  • If you have been thinking about doing more NPP, this is an especially good month to jump in. Whether you can review a few pages or hundreds, every review helps. And if you are already an active patroller, please consider whether you can put in some additional time during September to help bring the backlog back under control.
  • Interested in taking part? Sign up here.
You're receiving this message because you are a new page patroller. To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

List of Recovering Species

[edit]

Hi Noleander, I saw on your user page that you're planning to put up List of recovering species for PR, then FA. Since this article is considered to be a "list", it would be ineligible for FAC; the appropriate venue would be Featured list candidates (FLC). Also note that FLC has a different set of criteria compared to FAC. Although some stuff like professional standards of prose and stability are required, FLC emphasises more on accessibility to readers and how stuff are organised (like the scope of the list, formatting of items, etc). Good luck on the list! Icepinner (Come to Hakurei Shrine!) 15:53, 27 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I see that this was simultaneously done via review circles. I do not really know what is the best way to handle nominations that have a pledge and are part of a review circle. Of course we could just cancel the pledge, but I do not always notice the review circle so this would need to be done by the person who made the pledge. —Kusma (talk) 20:20, 30 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

FAC

Hi there Noleander, I hope you're fine. I know you didn't promise to look at Idia but I am hoping you will be able to look at the FAC nom if you have time, please. Thank you already. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 12:37, 1 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Vanderwaalforces - Of course, I'd be happy to. I'll get started later today. If I have not started in 48 hours, remind me, that simply means I got distracted :-) Noleander (talk) 12:43, 1 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi NL (I hope I can call you that? :p), I trust you're well. I am back again with WP:Featured article candidates/Ohuan/archive1 which is surprisingly stalled since I initiated it, I wonder if something is wrong, but that is by the way, I am hoping you're able to take a book when you have time.
Also, out of curiousity, are you a maps expert? I am looking forward to seeing how svg maps can be created for old Kingdom of Benin villages and towns.
Myself, I have been very down for weeks based on plenty negative comments I've received on this wiki, but somehow some kind editors have done magic and I am back rejuvenated (I am really hoping so, lol) again. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 13:30, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Vanderwaalforces - Regarding Ohuan, it looks like you have not put it thru the WP:PR process, correct? That is risky. Especially if you are worried about it passing FAC, or worried about negative comments/reviews. You should consider withdrawing the FAC nominition (just ask any FAC coordinator) and put it thru PR before nominating at FAC. I put all of my nominations thru GA, then PR, before I come to FAC.
Regarding maps: I am a map expert; and I can edit existing map SVG files; but I don't create new maps ... that is a specialized skill that I have not mastered. If you have an existing SVG map and want small changes to it, I can probably help with that.
Regarding negative comments in WP: That is the nature of WP. Everyone has to come up with their own strategy to deal with it. At one extreme is to walk away from WP; at the other extreme is to be confrontational and engage in debates. I tend to follow a middle ground where, if I encounter an article that has combative editors, I move on to another article. There are lots of things to work on in WP, it is simpler to just move on to articles that are peaceful. Noleander (talk) 13:54, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Four of my recent FA promotions didn't have to go through PR, I personally have a reservation for PRs generally, so I don't use that process at all. They all went straight from GAN to FAC.
Oh, I thought you knew how to, no problems then :)
Re negative comments, actually I do have a strong skin, and in addition I think my case is complicated bahaha. Better days ahead, hopefully. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 14:05, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi NL, wanted to let you know that three other valuable editors have given a look, so if you're able to do a source review or anything, I'll be more than happy ;) Vanderwaalforces (talk) 15:17, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't have time right now to do a FAC review .. in fact, I've already promised to do two other FAC reviews, and I'm woefully behind schedule on those :-) FYI: I took a quick glance at Ohuan and I see that section "Family and accession" has a double-high space after the 1st paragraph. I'll be happy to do a review of your next FAC nomination (but I suggest you put it thru PR first... that makes it easier on the FAC reviewers!) Noleander (talk) 16:40, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

FAC mentor

[edit]

Hi, would you be willing to mentor me for FAC? NRP (talk) 00:35, 2 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Sure. Do you have a specific article you want to promote to FA status? Noleander (talk) 00:40, 2 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I would like to get Fawn Fire to FA status at some point. I was wondering if a wildfire article is something you would be interested in mentoring for. NRP (talk) 00:41, 2 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I'd be happy to help. Mostly I can give you constructive criticism and ideas, and help with the FAC process. And I can to a Peer Review on the article. But it is wisest if I don't edit the article directly, since that would detract from the learning experience. I suggest you start with reading:
Before final editing on the article, the most important thing you can do is search for sources. Search everywhere. Everything in FA depends on finding good, reliable sources. If you overlook any good sources, and an FA reviewer finds out that they were overlooked, that can derail the nomination.
Do you have any specific questions about the FAC process? Noleander (talk) 00:48, 2 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
My main question so far is if I should open a peer review first. Looking at your essay, it looks like the answer is yes, so I'll open one soon. This essay looks really helpful, thanks! NRP (talk) 00:52, 2 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, open a PR now. PRs are very informal, and it is no big deal to start one. You can terminate it any time. Also, it is hard to attract reviewers, so it is unlikely any reviewers will respond in the next few days.
After you create the PR, add the PR into the list at Template:FAC peer review sidebar. Add the PR to the bottom of that list, with the date. This step is not required for PRs, but it is common for articles where the nominator is planning on taking it to FAC someday. Editors that are interested in FA will review that list of PRs and sometimes volunteer to review the article (in PR, before it even gets to FAC). So, it is important that you learn about that list and how to add PRs to it. Noleander (talk) 00:59, 2 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
After you open the PR, let me know. I'll try to review it within the next few days.
Credit for the essay WP:FACFAQ goes to User:MSincccc who started it and wrote most of it.
After you open the PR, I strongly suggest that you go to WP:FAC and find a couple of nominations for articles that you find interesting, and do a couple of brief FAC reviews. No rush: any time in the next week or two. They don't have to be super detailed reviews: You can write: "This is a drive-by review" at the start of the review, which means you are only posting one or two small constructive criticisms. Noleander (talk) 01:04, 2 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I just opened a peer review and added it to the sidebar. Let me know when you review it. Also, I have been reviewing a handful of FACs, so I'll reach out to the nominators of those to see if they're willing to give a review. Thanks for all the advice :) NRP (talk) 01:08, 2 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
You can ask anyone to contribute to the PR. Editors that you did a FA review for are a good start. Another avenue is to find editors that are interested in wildfires. Search for other articles on wildfires (anywhere in the world) and (if they are GA or FA quality) asking the primary editor to provide feedback at your PR. Noleander (talk) 01:19, 2 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, that is a good idea... I was also taking a look at past wildfire FAs, looking at their FACs, and taking note of who usually did reviews. I'll try to see if some of them are interested. NRP (talk) 01:22, 2 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Also consider GAs ... there are lot more GA articles than FA. Noleander (talk) 01:23, 2 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Good point NRP (talk) 01:44, 2 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
It's at FAC now, thanks a ton for all your advice :) NRP (talk) 20:46, 5 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Re. Map reviews

[edit]

You've come so far with the Map FAC for it to be archived. Well, how about putting it up at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/FAC urgents, since it's been a fortnight since the last revision? I could have done it myself, but Gog made it known that it's better if the nominator or a coord does it. Best, MSincccc (talk) 06:54, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

I'm not worried yet. Maybe another week or two. I'd probably ask a coordinator to do it ... I'm not sure if the coordinators like nominators to do it. Noleander (talk) 12:54, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Re. a future piece for the Signpost

[edit]

I realise that you've quite a busy schedule both on and off-Wiki, now that you are both at FAC and FL. But I would appreciate it if you could share some Wiki-specific answers which I intend to include inside this piece.

I'm presently working on the questions so that I don't take up much of your time. The article will cover the advice multiple users, who have been on the platform for years, have to share with newcomers and those who are not that experienced.

Thanks for your time and I look forward to seeing you at your next PR or FAC; I am only a ping away. Best, MSincccc (talk) 16:12, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

I'm not too familiar with the WP Signpost. If you want to submit an article to them, you may want to consider creating a post on their Talk page, somewhere near Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost. You can ask the Signpost experts for advice. Not only will you get some good suggestions, but you'll also become known to the Signpost editors ... and they will have final say over which articles are accepted, so you want to demonstrate to them that you are sensible and can generate a decent article.
It may be risky to give the Signpost editors a fully completed article. It may go smoother if the Signpost editors feel they had some role in its production. So maybe you can post notes on the Signpost Talk page periodically with drafts of your article, so they can glance at it and see it progress.
As for the topic "how to survive WP" ... you'll want to study all existing advice resources in WP to ensure that you're not duplicating too much. Study Wikipedia:Teahouse, Wikipedia:Welcoming committee, Help:Introduction, Wikipedia:Village pump, Help:Your first article. A little bit of overlap with existing help/tip/advice pages is okay, but the Signpost editors will want some assurance that there is not too much duplication.
If your article is 99% responses by other editors you query, that makes your job a lot simpler, but you still may want to ask Signpost to review drafts as you go along. Good luck! Noleander (talk) 16:37, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your advice. By the way, I am just getting off the mark with this one.
I made my debut earlier this year. Hopefully, I will be able to do at least a percent as good as yours while researching my material for my second piece.
As for the submission, I have notified the Signpost here. Also, I hope that I didn't overdo my copyediting at the recovering species and Map articles. Best, MSincccc (talk) 17:04, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't mind the copy editing. But when the article is in good shape, it becomes "painting the lily, and gilding the gold". Every minute you are copy editing is a minute you could be working on your own featured articles!! Noleander (talk) 17:27, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't quite have the comfort of longer stretches (like summer) to devote to FA-level research for an article like Catherine's, so I tend to focus more on copyedits and reviews instead.
That said, I am always impressed by how efficiently you manage to research and bring articles to FA. I bet you're already working on your next FA.
But yes, I do hope to take on something more substantial in the near future. Thanks again for your support. MSincccc (talk) 07:32, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thank you today for Dam, about "important civil engineering structures that many of us depend on every day for our drinking water or electricity"! That sounds so simple and must be so difficult: such a broad subject! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:14, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations on the List of recovering species becoming a FL. I look forward to the same for the Map, and I'd be happy to take a look at any of your articles. I hope you've a great day. Best, MSincccc (talk) 06:04, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks - that list article was a change of pace ... thanks for all your help with the copy editing, much appreciated. I'm working on a new article now, but it is in upheaval and way too early for anyone else to look at. I'll let you know when it is up for Peer Review. Noleander (talk) 12:13, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
