Administrators' newsletter – October 2026

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2026).

Administrator changes

Oversight changes

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the good article criteria have been amended to add accessibility requirements.
  • Following an RfC, late signatures added to administrator recall petitions after 720 hours from opening are reverted or struck and do not count towards the threshold, even if the petition has not yet been formally closed.
  • The post-May 2026 administrator elections RfCs concluded with consensus for election monitors to curate blatantly inappropriate questions after posting, and to remove or merge true duplicates, clearly marking merged questions. Calls for candidates will include advisory guidance that users with less than one year’s experience or 5,000 edits generally lack a realistic chance of success.

Technical news

  • Interface administrators no longer need to specify the ResourceLoader option in the definitions for gadgets on MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition as gadgets are always loaded through ResourceLoader. (T298199)
  • The list=abusefilters API module now supports formatversion=2 and includes breaking changes to its responses. In particular, the actions property is now a JSON array rather than a string, regardless of the format version. Maintainers of user scripts and other code using this module should check compatibility and update their code as needed. (T435828)

Arbitration

Obituaries

  • Doug Weller passed away on 30 September 2026. Doug Weller began editing Wikipedia in 2006 and became an administrator in 2008, making nearly 275,000 edits over two decades. He served on the Arbitration Committee from 2015 through 2018 and was also a longtime CheckUser and Oversighter.

I'd asked for deletion so that the history would be in place for restoration; I'd noted that in the CSD tag. Now it's more complicated to restore the history. Please do what's needed to restore the history. - In solidarity, UtherSRG (talk) 19:15, 4 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi UtherSRG, I did not see the note as the 'summary' field does not show on the notice you have to use the 'reason' field for that. Although the {{Db-afc-move}} lists it supports the summary field it does not appear to actually pass it on and has a hard-coded summary. Also as an admin would only see that field if they tried to delete it would not have helped anyway. It was not a cut-and-paste so technically a history merge was not required, but I agree having the history merged works in this case so I did merge anyway, although I'm sure some will disagree. Kindly unblock and undelete this user page asap!

[edit]

@KylieTastic, same as subject and kindly accept my apology I’ve offered to everybody over the last week or two! Mamoos 007 (talk) 13:16, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Are you asking for your user page User:Mammoos 007 to be undeleted? I can do that if you want, but I can't unblock you. As pointed out on the talk page see Wikipedia:Guide to appealing blocks. KylieTastic (talk) 14:31, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes to undelete, and I have already submitted my unblock request through the form here, and Star Mississippi is hopefully looking at it based on the last time I checked. Mamoos 007 (talk) 14:45, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Mammoos 007,  Done KylieTastic (talk) 14:48, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Noticed that you did something on the article and that you also are a reviewer. When you have a chance, would you be able to review it? Thanks in advance PlainJane91 (talk) 09:40, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi @KylieTastic you may have missed this. PlainJane91 (talk) 10:45, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi PlainJane91, sorry for the late reply but I've had a couple of IRL busy days. Just in case your not aware admins, just like all editors here, are just volunteers doing this in their free time. My only interaction with Shelley Sullivan was to deleted the original cross-namespace redirect. The page will be patrolled in due time and I don't do reviews by request as I view it unfair to prioritise those that request over those just waiting. Also it's just not my area of interest and I rarely work on BLPs and even more so this type. Regards KylieTastic (talk) 18:54, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for explaining @KylieTastic. My apologies for asking. PlainJane91 (talk) 19:59, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
PlainJane91 no worries for asking, it's an reasonable thing people are used to doing in the offline world. If someone has been more involved with an article or has shown an interest they may be open to asking. Many of us try to help editors as much as we can, but to put in context I came home to 20+ emails requesting action tonight and with the on-wiki tasks I normally do I have many thousands of things to action so it's just resource/time balancing. Also without asking you had no way to know that I just don't like dealing with those types of BLPs. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 20:22, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for all you do in making this a better place! PlainJane91 (talk) 20:28, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
