Highest intelligence quotient

[edit]

If you do a quick Google search, you will soon find quite a few websites that this man is, as of July 2016, the individdual who has the world's highest IQ,with an IQ of over 200. Should this be included in this article?Vorbee (talk) 15:36, 3 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Non-binary Child's Gender Identity.

Ok. Please provide absolute proof that his son chose to change his name to Riley Tao.

Thanks. 73.92.67.207 (talk) 09:26, 16 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Should we note that his brith name is William? I don't realy know how relevant info about him is. If we decide that it is relevant, we could mention that he is 20 years old (this claim must be dobble-checked) and has taken machine learning classes.
Also, I had a conversation with the guy who edited that in, which you can see here. Felixsj (talk) 10:59, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hello,
I am the firstborn child of Terence Tao, and my name is Riley. What proof of this fact would suffice to remove my deadname from this page? The New York Times podcast, as well as several publications in Cast of Wonders, Reckoning, Seize the Press, etc are written under my name, but I recognize that because they do not specifically link me to Terence Tao they may not be sufficient proof. Would you like me to request that my father write something on his blog confirming my name, or would that not qualify as a source? (I vaguely recall something about "original research" not being a valid Wikipedia source, but I am fairly new to this and have an incomplete understanding of what that entails.) Why should we care? why is this even put on wiki? Your pronouns aren't even mentioned... 178.24.189.43 (talk) 22:43, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'd rather have my name accurately represented, which it currently is. Meowcats734 (talk) 22:46, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

"one of the greatest living mathematicians" is encyclopedic tone?

[edit]

Hello. There is one thing that bothers me: I've seem many articles tell some mathematician is one of the greatest living or even greatest of the century and things like that... For example, this article says he "is widely regarded as one of the greatest living mathematicians". I think this is essentially correct, but it's nonetheless meaningless and not written in an encyclopedic tone. I did not dare to remove it, because it cites five sources to support it. But why meaningless? Well, it doesn't convey any useful information, also because: Is he among the top 100? Maybe the top 50? There are many impressive Fields Medallists, Abel Prize winners, Wolf Prize winners, etc... who are still alive. Should we mention at Jean-Pierre Serre, Andrew Wiles, Peter Scholze, Grigori Perelman, John Milnor, Mikhael Gromov, Stephen Smale and so on that they are among the greatest living mathematicians? I think not. Maybe there is some Wikipedia policy already about things like this? Pentakol (talk) 02:17, 16 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Every Fields Medal winner alive today is "widely regarded as one of the greatest living mathematicians". Just as every Nobel Prize in Physics winner alive today is "widely regarded as one of the greatest living physicists". There is not need for MOS:PEACOCK language in the articles about them. Just describe Tao's main contributions to mathematics and the major prizes he won. JLW57 (talk) 12:11, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
One of the references for the claim https://newsroom.ucla.edu/releases/Terence-Tao-Mozart-of-Math-7252 is a quote by John Garnett, who said "He’s an incredible talent, and probably the best mathematician in the world right now." Well, this is very different from "widely regarded as one of the greatest living mathematicians", it's the opinion of one person and uses the word "probably", so it doesn't source our article's claim. enough is enough.

no mention of The Feff? in my mind it's without doubt charles fefferman is the greatest mathematician alive today, i bet even countryman tao would agree because he's a humble human being.

you guys are all fucking poseurs man. seriously. look at the list you rattled off. all those guys are good, but fefferman is EASILY in that class. his work on the manifold hypothesis in machine learning alone, which doesn't even get any mention, is astounding. a lot of his work is far more practical than people think.

if we view his contributions as bricks, then it is as if the lone mason Fefferman decided to construct the mathematical-equivalent of the Third temple. let us not forget him in any of these conversations.

thank you
