Paid editing disclosure
[edit]I’m working on this article as a paid contributor through PUBLIC on behalf of German International School. I’ve also posted the required paid-editing disclosure on my user page.
Requested move 19 August 2026
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: moved to German International School Portland. Participants noted that the originally proposed title would require disambiguation; two possible DABs were proposed, and over time, consensus converged on "German International School Portland". German American School → German International School – The school has used the name German International School for several years, while the current article title reflects its former name, German American School. The proposed title reflects the school's current name. Sbacatan (talk) 22:28, 19 August 2026 (UTC) — Relisting. –Maltazarian ᚾparleyinvestigateᛅ 23:27, 26 August 2026 (UTC) — Relisting. - Move to
German International School (Oregon)orother disambiguator. WP:NOTPRIMARY. Compare e.g. pageviews , minimal presence of this school in Google News/Books hits for bare "German International School' , etc. ~2026-45663-75 (talk) 08:51, 22 August 2026 (UTC)- Move to German International School Portland which a better suggestion than my initial one, per Zeibgeist's evidence below. ~2026-45663-75 (talk) 01:40, 4 September 2026 (UTC)
- Note: WikiProject Schools, WikiProject Germany, and WikiProject Oregon have been notified of this discussion. –Maltazarian ᚾparleyinvestigateᛅ 23:28, 26 August 2026 (UTC)
- Move to German International School Portland in line with the other schools at the disambiguation page. This particular school is not the primary topic, as anon points out. Zeibgeist (talk) 05:06, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
- Relister comment: Which disambiguator—"Oregon" or "Portland"? ModernDayTrilobite (talk • contribs) 17:52, 3 September 2026 (UTC)
- German International School Portland is the full name used on the school's own website and it also aligns with all of the other schools at the German International School dab page, which have "German International School" with the name of the city appended. That's what I'd lean towards for naturalness and consistency, although I'm not firmly opposed to German International School (Oregon). Zeibgeist (talk) 18:03, 3 September 2026 (UTC)
- Move to German International School Portland per Zeibgeist, and add this to the dab page. Dekimasuよ! 09:15, 9 September 2026 (UTC)

I am a paid editor working for PUBLIC Campaigns on behalf of German International School Portland. My paid-editing relationship has previously been disclosed on my user page. I am requesting the changes below for independent editor review rather than editing the article directly.
1. Lead
[edit]Please replace the current opening paragraph with:
"German International School Portland, formerly the German American School of Portland, is an independent International Baccalaureate (IB) World School in Beaverton, Oregon, in the Portland metropolitan area. Founded in 1995, the school serves students from age two through eighth grade and offers German immersion, Mandarin Chinese immersion, and an English middle-school track."
Reason: This wording keeps the lead limited to basic, verifiable information about the school's identity, founding year, current age/grade range, language programs, and IB status.
Sources:
- German Federal Foreign Office — German Schools Abroad: German International School Portland — official government listing confirming the school's current identity and Beaverton location.
- German International School — "Bettina Gregg Named New Head of School at GIS" (July 1, 2025) — states that GIS was founded in 1995, serves students ages two through Grade 8, and offers German and Mandarin Chinese immersion programs.
- German International School — FAQs — states that the Middle School is available in German, Mandarin Chinese, or English.
- International Baccalaureate — Find an IB World School — lists German International School of Portland as a PYP-authorized IB World School.
2. Add the 2020 Northwest Chinese Academy history
[edit]Please add the following to the History section:
"In 2020, Northwest Chinese Academy merged with German International School. The Mandarin-immersion program continued at GIS as a Chinese-language track alongside the school's German program."
Reason: This is a significant part of the development of the school's current Mandarin Chinese program and is currently missing from the article.
Source:
- Mandarin Immersion Parents Council — "How a Portland-area Mandarin immersion school almost closed but was reborn with a German accent" (September 16, 2021) — a specialized independent publication on Mandarin-immersion education. The article, based in part on interviews with then-NWCA head Martha Ortiz, describes the discussions between NWCA and GIS and states that the newly merged schools opened in fall 2020 with Chinese and German tracks.
I recognize that this is a specialized source rather than a major general-news publication, so I leave the determination of whether it is sufficient for inclusion to the reviewing editor.
3. Revise the 2023 middle-school history
[edit]The current History section states that the middle-school expansion occurred "following a decision by the school's board" and also refers to the first graduating class.
Please replace the board-decision portion with:
"In 2023, German International School expanded its program to include a middle school division."
Reason: I have not located a reliable published source supporting the specific statement that the expansion followed a particular board decision. The simpler wording is consistent with available sources showing the school's grade-range expansion and middle-school development beginning in 2023.
Sources:
- Portland Monthly — "Portland Private Schools, by the Numbers: 2022–2023" — lists German International School as PK–6 for the 2022–2023 school year.
- Portland Monthly — "Portland Private Schools by the Numbers: 2023–2024" — lists German International School as PK–7 for the 2023–2024 school year.
- German International School — "Bettina Gregg Named New Head of School at GIS" (July 1, 2025) — states that Bettina Gregg had served as Middle School Director since 2023 and led development of the middle-school program.
4. Correct the IB wording
[edit]The Academics section currently states:
"The IB framework structures the school's day-school curriculum from the early grades through 8th grade."
Please replace that sentence with:
"German International School is an International Baccalaureate World School authorized for the Primary Years Programme (PYP)."
Reason: The official International Baccalaureate directory currently lists German International School of Portland with PYP authorization and does not list MYP, DP, or CP authorization. The proposed wording avoids implying broader IB authorization than the official directory verifies.
Source:
- International Baccalaureate — Find an IB World School — the directory row for German International School of Portland shows PYP authorization, with MYP, DP, and CP not listed.
5. Remove the Nike furniture claim
[edit]Please remove:
"Furniture for the expanded spaces was donated by Nike, Inc., which is headquartered in Beaverton."
Reason: The statement is currently presented without a supporting citation, and I have not located a reliable published source that verifies the Nike-specific donation claim. I therefore request that the Nike-specific statement be removed unless another editor can identify an appropriate reliable source.
No source is being offered in support of this statement because the purpose of this request is to remove material for which I have not found adequate sourcing.
6. Remove unsupported first-graduating-class / outcomes claims
[edit]Please remove statements asserting that:
- the middle school enrolled or graduated its first eighth-grade class during the 2025–2026 academic year; and
- those students placed into a range of independent or public secondary schools in the Portland area.
Reason: I have not located sufficiently reliable independent sourcing for these claims. The school's current website contains general statements about graduates and high-school preparation, but those are first-party promotional statements and do not independently verify the specific "first graduating class" or placement claims.
For that reason, I am requesting removal unless another editor can identify a suitable independent reliable source.
7. Citation maintenance
[edit]The article currently carries a "needs more citations" maintenance notice.
I am not requesting removal of that notice as part of this edit request. I leave that determination to independent editors after reviewing the article's sourcing.
The intent of this request is limited to:
- clarifying the lead with basic verifiable information;
- adding the sourced 2020 Northwest Chinese Academy history if the reviewing editor considers the specialized source sufficient;
- removing unsupported board-decision language;
- correcting the IB description to match the official IB directory; and
- removing claims for which I have not found adequate sourcing.
Thank you for reviewing these proposed changes.
