The 2026 Boston Red Sox season was the 126th season in Boston Red Sox franchise history, and their 115th season at Fenway Park. The team opened the regular season in an away game against the Cincinnati Reds on March 26 and concluded the regular season with a home game (played in Florida due to inclement weather in Boston) against the Chicago Cubs on September 27.[4]

After a 10–17 (.370) start, including a sweep at home against their rival New York Yankees, the Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora on April 25.[5][6][a] Triple-A Worcester Red Sox manager Chad Tracy was subsequently named as the team's interim manager by chief baseball officer Craig Breslow.[9][10] Tracy was officially named as the team's permanent manager on September 22.[11]

On July 22, the team won its 15th game in a row to tie the franchise record for consecutive games won, established 80 years earlier by the 1946 Red Sox.[12] At the end of the month, the Red Sox' 21–4 (.840) record set a new record for their highest monthly winning percentage in franchise history.[13][b]

Facing the Kansas City Royals on September 13, starting pitcher Payton Tolle became the first Red Sox pitcher to record an immaculate inning since Chris Sale accomplished the feat in 2021, and the first to do so in the first inning of the game since Pedro Martínez in 2002.[15]

The Red Sox clinched their second consecutive playoff berth on September 20, when the Atlanta Braves defeated the Houston Astros.[16] The Red Sox became the fourth team in major-league history to clinch a playoff spot after being 14 or more games below .500 during the season.[17][c] They were swept by their division rival New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card Series in two games.

Offseason

[edit]

At the conclusion of the 2025 season, the Red Sox had 11 players under contract for the 2026 season: Roman Anthony, Brayan Bello, Kristian Campbell, Aroldis Chapman, Garrett Crochet, Jarren Duran, Jordan Hicks, Ceddanne Rafaela, Patrick Sandoval, Garrett Whitlock, and Masataka Yoshida.[19] Four players had contract options and/or opt-outs, four players were eligible to become free agents, nine players were eligible for arbitration, and an additional 22 players were not yet eligible for arbitration due to their limited service time in MLB, and could therefore be retained by the team for the league-minimum salary or released.[19]

Spring training

[edit]

The team's equipment departed Fenway Park on February 2, colloquially known as "Truck Day", in preparation for their arrival in Fort Myers, Florida to begin Spring Training.[63]

The Red Sox' first spring training was an exhibition contest against the Northeastern Huskies at Fenway South on February 20.[64] The team's Grapefruit League schedule ran from February 21 through March 24, including a game on March 3 against Puerto Rico as one of Puerto Rico's friendly preparation games ahead of the 2026 World Baseball Classic.[64] The Red Sox compiled a 13–16 record across their Grapefruit League contests.[65]

2026 World Baseball Classic

[edit]

The World Baseball Classic (WBC), an international baseball tournament held every three to six years, took place from March 5 to March 17. The WBC coincided with MLB's spring training schedule, so the following Red Sox players did not take part in the full spring training schedule:[66][67]

Eight Red Sox players were on teams which reached the semifinal round of the WBC,[68] and four players appeared in the final: Anthony and Whitlock for the United States and Abreu and Contreras for Venezuela.[69] Abreu, Contreras, and Suárez were crowned champions of the tournament after Venezuela defeated the U.S. 3–2 in the final, and Anthony was subsequently named to the All-WBC Team.[70]

Note: due to inclement weather, changes were made to the final three games of the regular season, which were originally scheduled for September 25, 26, and 27. The September 27 game was moved to September 25 as part of a split-admission doubleheader.[75] The September 26 game was subsequently rescheduled to September 27 and relocated to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.[76] This Red Sox "home" game became the first to be played outside of Boston since the team faced the Yankees in the MLB London Series in 2019, and the first instance of a Boston-scheduled home game being relocated in franchise history.[77]

Notes

[edit]
  1. ↑ Bench coach Ramón Vázquez, hitting coach Peter Fatse, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson, and third base coach Kyle Hudson were also fired, while game planning coach Jason Varitek was reportedly reassigned to a non-uniformed role.[7] No new role was announced for Varitek and at the end of the season Red Sox leadership stated that Varitek was no longer part of the organization.[8]
  2. ↑ The previous franchise record for a month was a .800 winning percentage, set in June 1901 (20–5) and matched in August 1950 (24–6).[14]
  3. ↑ The other three teams were the 1914 Boston Braves, 1974 Pittsburgh Pirates, and 2005 Houston Astros.[18]
  4. ↑ Ranger Suárez was replaced on the American League roster by Nick Martinez due to injury.[107]
  5. ↑ Willson Contreras was added to the American League roster as an injury replacement for Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
  6. ↑ Ceddanne Rafaela was added to the American League roster as an injury replacement for Aaron Judge.
