A24 has unveiled the first trailer for Civil War, its action epic from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina), also announcing that it will be released in theaters (including on IMAX screens) on April 26, 2024.
While specifics as to the film’s plot have heretofore been kept under wraps, it’s now described as chronicling a race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor’s edge. Kirsten Dunst (The Power of the Dog), Wagner Moura (The Gray Man) and Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) appear to play journalists involved, at a time when the United States has become a literal battleground, with 19 states seceding from the Union.
While not previously announced as part of the cast, Nick Offerman (The Last of Us) is introduced in today’s trailer as playing a fascist U.S. President, who’s at war with the so-called “Western Forces” of Texas and California. Also making an appearance as a threatening figure along our central trio’s path to D.C. is Dunst’s husband, Oscar nominee Jesse Plemons (Killers of the Flower Moon). Rounding out the cast are Stephen McKinley Henderson (Beau Is Afraid) and Sonoya Mizuno (House of the Dragon).

Garland directed Civil War from his own script. In addition to serving as distributor, A24 produced the pic alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA and Gregory Goodman.
Best known for the Alicia Vikander starrer Ex Machina, an A24 robot thriller that was nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, Garland has also previously collaborated with the mini major on the recently released horror drama Men, starring Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear. Other past projects from the filmmaker include the alien-themed sci-fi horror Annihilation and FX’s Devs.
Check out the trailer for his latest film — of course, debuting in the year of a nervously anticipated Presidential election — above.
This movie should NOT have been made and should NOT be released.
I saw the preview today. It looks like this movie is trying to turn people against our Military. Not realistic since our Military does nothing but sacrifice for us every day to keep us safe. What disrespect. Why dishonor our brave Men and women likevthisvand potentially create distrust ?I for one will not go see this movie and will make sure that I tell others not to as well.
It is not disrespect. It is fiction. Are you unaware of military takeovers of democracies. Or that the President in this film looks like Trump, a would-be-dictator.
Texas and California are ALLIES in this thing? Okay right there it takes me right outta this. I’d rather watch a sci fi movie about twelve headed purple aliens from the seventeenth dimension who invade Earth to steal all our pop-tarts. That would be more plausible.
Well since it’s Texas and California, your theory of lefties fighting against a rightie government seems unlikely.
Trivia: Alex Garland’s first book from the 90s still has a massive waiting list at digital libraries.
Who does this sound like?
“…the most lethal domestic terrorism threat is racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists and most likely to carry out mass-casualty attacks against civilians.
Other domestic terrorism threats include:
Anti-government or anti-authority violent extremists: this type of threat uses force to further ideological agendas.
Militia violent extremists: These extremists typically target law enforcement and the government.”
It’s clear: armed protests, white Supremecy rallies, January 6 stopping of voters certification – the clear and present danger is the extremists in the Trump Party calling for an “Orange Jesus” dictator. These are NOT beards with guns. These are bad actors who hate 🇺🇸 America the beautiful and are attempting to bring it down after 247 years.
NO THANKS!
No where does it state their political affiliation, at least in the trailer
