Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley – Play Review

Play Miss Bennet currently playing at @Theatreworks enthralls and transports the audience to the world of Regency era with dainty ladies, cigar smoking gentlemen and romance, gossips and expressions in Austen style English. Written by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon and directed by Jeffrey Lo the play brings back the delightful characters that we know and love from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The Bennet sisters meet at Pemberley to celebrate Christmas.

Miss Mary Bennet, the middle sister is often overlooked and disregarded both because she is neither beautiful and perky like her elder sisters, nor gossipy and immature like younger ones. She is bookish and pedantic and declares early in the play that she’d rather be “married to a plot than to an idiot man”. Well aware of being ignored, Mary prefers her books to gossip and men. Growing up with four vivacious sisters, Mary remains unattached and has been written off as spinster for life.

And yet it is at Pemberley, she finds her nerdy soulmate who is equally uneasy among socialites, is a wealthy, tall and dashing young man who appreciates and enjoys books as much as Mary. Kausar Mohammed as Elizabeth Darcy, Adam Griffith as Mr. Darcy, Amanda Putcini as Jane Bingley, William Thomas Hodgson as Mr. Bingley round out the show. Playing the role of socially awkward but endearing Darcy’s cousin, Arthur De Bourgh is David Toshiro Crane and in the role of impulsive, attention seeking Lydia Wickham is Sophie Oda.

The play will be running till the end of December, 2024 and tickets are available at www.theatreworks.org
