Welcome to the Photography critiques!
Would you like a second opinion before nominating a photograph of yours as a Quality Image, Valued Image or Featured Picture candidate, can't decide which of your images to enter into one of the Photo Challenges? Or do you have specific questions about how to improve your photography or just would like some general feedback?
This is the right page to gather other people's opinions!
If you want general suggestions to a good photo, you can ask here, and we already wrote guidelines.
If you don't get some terminology used here, don't be shy you can ask about it, or read
Please insert new entries at the bottom, and comment on oldest entries first.
To prevent archiving use {{subst:DNAU}}, because SpBot archives all sections after 90 days, unless archiving has been postponed or suppressed through the use of {{subst:DNAU}}. You can ask the bot to archive a section earlier by using {{Section resolved|1=~~~~}} – then it will be archived after 7 days.

- First pic: backlit lighting, average image quality (phone camera + typical phone denoising). The colors are a bit odd because the shadows are extremely saturated blue. Second pic: also backlit lighting (though the editing has rescued it slightly) and much worse sharpness (seems to have been upscaled a lot), and still overly strong saturation. As such I don't think they would make it at QI or FP. But overall, these photos are still valuable contributions since this part of Algeria doesn't have a lot of photos, so thank you for your contributions! dllu (talk) 21:15, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- Adding on to say upscaling is frowned upon generally. If you didn't already, set your iPhone to shoot in RAW and then process the RAWs in LR. As per dllu, what is more important is the significance of these photos. JayCubby (talk) 21:24, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- Ok thanks, i'll for next photos to take it in RAW. Tasye24 (talk) 07:55, 19 September 2026 (UTC)

Swamp in the Fall
[edit]Looking for suggestions on anything I should have done differently to improve these pictures. I'm trying to capture the color of the early-fall foliage with the natural beauty of the wetland. I'm especially uncertain about my skills with composition; if there's some other angle I should have captured instead I could certainly go back there and try again while the trees are still colorful. I know I have a dust spot I need to deal with too. Thanks for any feedback you can provide. — PeterCooperJr (talk) 12:45, 5 October 2026 (UTC)
- Hello, I had a few suggestions. Try taking your photos earlier or later in the day; noon/ high sun photos can get washed out, even though the leaf color is spectacular to the naked eye. You could also reposition slightly to try to get the sun behind you more. Composition looks good, although landscape is probably better than portrait for this. LadySmither (talk) 00:37, 18 October 2026 (UTC)
- The composition could be improved. Find one item to make the focus of the image (e.g. a tree) with something else distinctive next to or behind it for contrast. Buidhe (talk) 03:15, 20 October 2026 (UTC)
- I agree with User:LadySmither and also see a Opportunity to make this artistic by also capturing the entire reflection of the tree by lowering yuor camera and capturing the mirror image off the water. --Don (talk) 17:37, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
- I agree regarding time of day, but there's also something going on here that holds the photo back but isn't your fault: the sky. A totally flat blue sky (especially at mid-day) is almost always a problem for otherwise pretty landscapes. Returning on a partly cloudy day, earlier or later in the day, will set you up for success more than adjusting settings in the camera IMO. — Rhododendrites talk | 21:58, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
I understand the AF goofed slightly and my hands, to make things worse, have a bit of a resting tremor, so the sharpness isn't great. With that aside, how could I improve the compo and post-processing here? JayCubby (talk) 21:34, 20 October 2026 (UTC)
- Looks a bit overexposed to me Buidhe (talk) 04:33, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
- It is a very nice photo Your Cannon does support RAW capture, and you can configure it to take both raw and jpg in the menu settings, that gives you a lot more image and less artificing to work with. As far as your "resting tremor" use a rock, or tree or another stable object, if you do not have a Mono pod or Stix you can use. That said with regard to this pic it looks to me like the focus was set on the rocks to the right. Brightness, Contrast and Vibrance mods will only enhance the motion blur in other areas of the pic. Don (talk) 17:33, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you both for the feedback. @Buidhe, I have tweaked the exposure, and @WPPilot I can send you the RAW if you want. JayCubby (talk) 19:59, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
- You're welcome to send the RAW file and I will give it a go. send link to my first name @ my last name dot com. Make sure you put As per request, in the subject line to make sure it gets past the spam firewall. Don (talk) 16:47, 25 October 2026 (UTC)
- It's a nice photo! Great seasonal color. The new version feels slightly washed out in the foreground, but in both versions something about the sky looks unnatural. Did you mask it and tweak it separately? I might also play with the left crop -- the diagonal line created by the river seems like it wants to cover a bit more of the frame. — Rhododendrites talk | 21:56, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
- @Rhododendrites the sky had overly aggressive highlight reduction. Reduced. I pushed the vibrance back up and cropped. Many thanks! JayCubby (talk) 23:22, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
