Erin Millar shared thisWhen we decided to recruit a CTO for Indiegraf, I didn't expect to gain a new friend too. Here's to many more evenings of dirty martinis and cribbage, Daniel Craigmile!Erin Millar shared this💡 When Indiegraf set out to build the operating system for independent local media, we knew we needed the right technical leader to bring that vision to life. Introducing Daniel Craigmile, Indiegraf's new Chief Technology Officer! Our Senior Director of Revenue Operations Amy Van Es sat down with Daniel to learn more about what drew him to this work, what he thinks the biggest opportunity in the publisher tools landscape is, and where he sees Indiegraf’s Operating System going from here. 👉 Read the Q&A with Daniel here: https://lnkd.in/gUagmqpU

Erin Millar shared thisMoney is power. At Indiegraf, we have a core thesis: for media organizations to be truly independent, they have to stand on their own two feet. When you own your revenue streams, you own your future. Not Big Tech. Not a single grant funder. You. That’s why I’m incredibly proud to announce a strategic partnership between Indiegraf and News Revenue Hub that brings RevEngine—which has already generated $174M for newsrooms—into the Indiegraf family of tools and News Revenue Hub’s strategic revenue consulting to our clients. We are building a unified "financial sovereignty" engine for local news. This is more than just a partnership; it’s a defensive move for an industry facing a polycrisis of AI disruption, funding declines, and political attacks. We’re also choosing collaboration over competition. By partnering with Mary Walter-Brown and the brilliant team at News Revenue Hub, we are streamlining the ecosystem. Indiegraf will lead on the technology, while the Hub doubles down on their best-in-class strategic consulting. We’re also excited to welcome Daniel Craigmile as Indiegraf’s new CTO. Daniel brings deep experience at the intersection of technology and journalism, most recently serving as CTO at News Revenue Hub and previously as Chief Technology and Security Officer at The Texas Tribune. Across his career, he’s led teams building scalable platforms, strengthening security, and shaping long-term technology strategy. He joins us at a pivotal moment as we continue to evolve Indiegraf to defend independent local media—and we’re thrilled to have his leadership guiding our product and engineering direction. Get in touch to learn more about how we’re building smart, efficient infrastructure to ensure local journalism remains an autonomous pillar of democracy. Onward. 🚀 https://lnkd.in/gjkG7T34

Erin Millar reposted thisWhen I teach classes on centering your audience in your product strategy, I often ask participants to raise their hand if they've been in a newsroom where research was presented with much fanfare, only to never be seen or heard of again. Almost every hand goes up. That's because people treat completion of the research as the final step. In reality, that's when the hard work begins: Disrupting your newsroom's products and processes and reshaping them around your new insights. I won't spend time in this class on how to design surveys or interviews. There are endless resources out there on that. Instead I'll focus on how to make your research more strategically useful and how to make sure it actually gets used when it's done. Join us!Erin Millar reposted thisAudience research only matters if your newsroom uses it. Here's what you'll walk away with after our free webinar with Ariel Zirulnick on August 18: → How to find the business challenge your research should actually solve → What you need to know about your audience to solve it → How to choose the right outputs to turn research into something your newsroom can use → How to weave research into your work → How to measure whether the research is making a difference Make sure to save your spot here: https://hubs.li/Q04rr1bk0 See you soon!

Erin Millar shared thisWhen we at Indiegraf say we're building an operating system for independent journalism, optimized for trust, this is what we mean. As of today, Indie Editor is available to all Indiegraf publishers - right in the backend of their CMS. This makes it extremely easy for reporters and editors to integrate trust-building best practices right into their copy. For example, research shows that writing that a source "refused to comment" has been shown to harm audiences' trust in the journalism. Indie Editor provides reporters with an easy, copy-and-paste fix, based on tested, research-backed language from the Trust News Project. This is how independent journalism can win in a media environment awash in AI slop. By showing our work, making the human in our editorial process visible and implementing proven trust-building tactics.

Erin Millar shared thisHuge congrats to Jeff Elgie, Richard Gingras and the whole team at Village Media. You deserve this!Erin Millar shared thisToday is a big day for Village Media. We’re proud to announce a significant investment from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to support the expansion of Village Media’s community journalism model into 15 communities across the United States. For a company born and built in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, earning the financial backing and confidence of one of the most respected institutions in American journalism and civic life is incredibly meaningful. This investment is also a powerful validation of what our team has built: a sustainable local media model that does more than report the news. We work to inform, connect, support, grow and empower the communities we serve. I’m enormously proud of our entire Village Media team. Their talent, commitment and belief in the importance of strong local journalism made this possible. Thank you to Knight Foundation for investing in our vision, and to The Globe and Mail for telling the story. We’re excited about what comes next. And we’re just getting started. #LocalJournalism #CommunityNews #VillageMedia #MediaInnovation https://lnkd.in/gsyxZVnfNorthern Ontario publisher expanding into U.S. with investment from Knight FoundationNorthern Ontario publisher expanding into U.S. with investment from Knight Foundation

Erin Millar shared thisFunding and impact opportunity! Politically-motivated efforts to shake the public's trust in the 2026 midterm elections are well underway, and local communities will be looking for trusted sources of information to help them understand what's really happening. Erin Millar reacted on thisErin Millar reacted on thisSome big news: News Revenue Hub and Indiegraf are partnering to advance the future of RevEngine, the contribution management platform that has helped newsrooms raise more than $177 million in reader revenue This is a significant moment, and it's given me a chance to reflect on what we’ve built. Since launching, RevEngine has made it easy for newsrooms to earn the support of their communities. Last year alone, we processed $25 million in contributions. I couldn’t be prouder of that. I’m also excited about what this partnership makes possible. News Revenue Hub will focus even more deeply on the work we do best: helping news organizations grow and become more sustainable through data-informed strategy, consulting, systems development, and operational support. At the same time, Indiegraf will lead the continued development of RevEngine, bringing its deep expertise in building smart, accessible technology for independent publishers. I greatly admire Erin Millar and look forward to continuing to work with her and her team. This partnership reflects something I believe strongly: independent newsrooms — and the organizations that support them — are better served when we collaborate, coordinate, and focus on our strengths. I’m grateful to everyone who helped build RevEngine, including my co-founder, Tristan Loper, and the amazing Daniel Craigmile, who architected the platform from the start. I’m excited that Daniel will continue helping guide RevEngine’s next chapter as part of the Indiegraf team, while our organizations work together to better serve independent publishers. 💫 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/geyruknQNews Revenue Hub and Indiegraf Announce Strategic Partnership to Strengthen Infrastructure for Independent Media Infrastructure - News Revenue HubNews Revenue Hub and Indiegraf Announce Strategic Partnership to Strengthen Infrastructure for Independent Media Infrastructure - News Revenue Hub

Erin Millar reacted on thisNews Revenue Hub started out serving digital-only newsrooms. But in the last few years, I've gotten more and more emails from legacy newspapers and alt weeklies — newsrooms with generations of built-in community trust, but subscriber and advertising models that are getting harder and harder each year. "Should we explore membership? Can it live alongside subscriptions? What's Step 1?" My answers: Absolutely, yes, and we got you. Look no further than The Two River Times. The 35-year-old weekly in New Jersey transitioned to nonprofit membership, linked up the the Hub, did a toooon of hard work to rethink and reposition their messaging, and saw incredible revenue and audience growth, year over year. Read more about how we did it 👇Erin Millar reacted on thisOur latest case study highlights how The Two River Times, a legacy local newspaper in New Jersey, is building a sustainable future through membership. After transitioning to nonprofit status, the newsroom worked with the Hub to strengthen its membership program, fundraising strategy, and audience growth efforts. The results are significant. They also represent a playbook for how legacy newspapers can build sustainable futures by combining their existing community relationships with new revenue strategies.
