Rangoli, also known as Alpana, Kolam and by other names, is the traditional Indian art of decorating courtyards, houses and places of worship.
A powder of white stone, lime, rice flour and other pastes or powders are used to draw intricate and ritual designs on the ground, often at the entrance to the home. Symmetrical and geometrical patterns are often used. Flower petals of different colours such as golden marigolds and bright red roses can also add an extra dimension to the pattern. Different beans and lentils also make a good rangoli.
Rangoli is particularly prevalent as part of the Diwali festival celebrated by Hindus annually which worships Lakshmi Goddess of light and wealth.

To call religion / faith regressive, retrograde, backwards and superstition is in vogue today. Our so called intellectuals in the excitement of being liberal and radical, look at religion akin to getting high and see it as a hindrance to progress, this tenancy is quite childish and immature. After analyzing the concept carefully, we come to this conclusion that for a person to be continuously inspired (to progress towards an ideal), while maintaining her/his ethics, discharging her/his duties responsibly and fulfilling her/his obligations, is possible only because of faith. Giving significance to materialistic goals while crossing the boundaries of decency will always result in the increase of evil and malice which will ultimately lead to destruction.

“Bharat Ratna” Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was a rare genius who could transcend the mundane and transport his audience to the sublime with his gifted voice that captured both anguish and ecstasy passes away at the age of 88.
He was born into a Kannada Brahmin family in Gadag, Karnataka. His father, Gururaj Joshi, was a school teacher and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was the eldest of 16 siblings. He was mostly raised by his step-mother, as his own mother passed away when he was very young.
The ‘Bharat Ratna”, the highest award of the land, bestowed on him in 2008 was nothing but a tribute paid by a grateful nation to a genius called Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, whose melodious exploration of Hindustani classical music enriched lives of a multitude of connoisseurs as well as the common man who doted upon the artistic grandeur of his colossal voice.
May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti!

The sun signifies knowledge, spiritual light and wisdom. Makar Sankranti signifies that we should turn away from the darkness of delusion in which we live, and begin to joyously let the light within us shine brighter and brighter. We should gradually begin to grow in purity, wisdom, and knowledge, even as the sun does from this day.
