Ecolinux – a lightweight Ubuntu-based Linux distribution developed in Japan.
Ecolinux aims to provide a modern and lightweight operating system for users of low-spec machines, etc., by using Ubuntu software.
Ecolinux can boot into your existing Windows system without making any changes. It’s even possible to install it without uninstalling Windows. It’s easier than having two Windows systems coexisting.
Ecolinux is a smart and lightweight Linux distribution. It can boot from a CD and, if needed, can be installed. Built on a modified version of the globally popular Ubuntu, it boasts stable operation and excellent device recognition capabilities. Furthermore, it utilizes the Ubuntu repository, allowing for easy installation of over 20,000 of the latest Linux software titles created by developers worldwide.
Ecolinux features the official Ubuntu installer, ensuring safe, reliable installation in just a few clicks.
Besides standard system tools and a few small applications, only the Mozilla Firefox internet browser is installed. Furthermore, small card games and puzzle games like Sudoku and chess that were included in Ubuntu have been removed. Ubuntu has many services running in the background from the start, but many have been removed for speed optimization.
Ecolinux only has the bare minimum of functions, such as a web browser, so the CD image size is about 400MB.
Several other types of Linux distributions exist besides Ecolinux.
– Ecolinux-ez An Ecolinux designed for Linux beginners, featuring graphical applications for network settings such as wireless LAN, updates, and printer configuration. Its desktop environment is Xfce.
– Ecolinux-lx – A successor to Ecolinux-light. It aims for greater lightness, faster operation, and improved usability compared to the Light version. It uses LXDE and is almost identical to Ecolinux.
– Ecolinux-light (Development Ended) – An even lighter distribution featuring the lightweight Fluxbox desktop manager. Development of Ecolinux-light started with the aim of creating an enhanced version of Damn Small Linux. It aimed to be a lightweight web terminal-like distribution. Internally, it’s Ecolinux with GNOME and Xfce packages removed and Fluxbox added. While its appearance is simple, its operation is lightweight.
