Employees at plant in Charleroi say location is closing; More than 300 jobs to be affected

A plant in Charleroi will close its doors by the end of the year.

Employees at the Anchor Hocking plant say they were given the news by the chief executive officer.

The closure would affect around 325 jobs. The CEO allegedly told employees that 150 positions would be moved to their plant in Lancaster, Ohio.

Daniele Byrne is the vice president of the United Steelworkers Local 53G. She works at the plant in Charleroi that makes Pyrex glass.

"I'm so emotional right now that I can't take it because we have put out good ware, and this community is going to suffer. There is nothing in this valley for us, and this is 300 good-paying union jobs. They are just going to go to Ohio," she said.

City officials tell Pittsburgh's Action News 4 they are devastated. Quality Pasta Company near the plant recently shut down. That closure meant 100 jobs lost.

Larry Celaschi is a Charleroi councilman and said, "My grandfather worked here for 50 years, blowing glass. And this hits home. We don't like to see what's taking place because we're seeing one side of the picture. But what I'm seeing is thieves in the night, and I'm seeing, wolves dressed in sheep's clothing coming in here and wrecking the lives of 325 families."

In the case of the Charleroi plant, employees say they were told production was shut down because officials did not want to keep two facilities open.

Pittsburgh Action News 4 talked with the CEO of Anchor Hocking, Mark Eichhorn, and he said, "No comment at this time."
