How to Feel Good About Your Appearance
In this quiz, we tell you which attractiveness archetype fits you best. Although we're sure you're a total looker, pretty much everyone deals with insecurities about the way they look from time to time! That's why wikiHow checked in with wellness and health experts for their takes on how to feel confident and self-assured in your appearance. Here's what they had to say:
Remember that beauty is subjective. Double board-certified dermatologist Ellen Turner, MD, explains that there's no one way to be attractive. "It's not necessarily a cookie-cutter standard," she says. "Beauty varies widely across different cultures and across the industry. It's just individualistic, and I think beauty is in the eye of the beholder."[1]
Try not to compare yourself to others. "People often don't feel confident when they are comparing themselves to other people," says image consultant and style advisor Jordan Stolch. She recommends not measuring your appearance against others and instead "focusing on the positive qualities that we bring forward, what we're grateful for about ourselves."[2]
Stay true to your unique style. In a similar vein, style strategist and wardrobe specialist Natalie Tincher says, "You will look prettiest when you feel prettiest. Worry less about what everyone else is wearing and more about what makes you feel uniquely you." To do this, Tincher recommends creating a mood or inspiration board with styles that feel authentic to you, and keeping a journal to make note of the outfits that made you feel the best when you wore them.[3]
Focus on cultivating self-confidence. Relationship coach Nicole Moore says that confidence is the number one thing that people find attractive in another person. "When you know what you’ve got and what you’re bringing to the table and you value who you are, you become instantly more irresistible to others," she explains.[4]
- Moore recommends this exercise to help build up your confidence regarding your appearance: "Actively practice looking in the mirror and finding things to appreciate instead of things to criticize. Your confidence will build because you’re focusing on what’s great about you, and you’re ignoring the critical voice that likes to point out your flaws."[5]
Try to shift your focus away from appearance. Therapist Rebecca Tenzer, MAT, MA, LCSW, cautions against being overly focused on your own appearance or the appearance of others, as this can lead to lookism. "Lookism is a form of discrimination based on physical appearance and how closely someone aligns with socially constructed standards of beauty and acceptability," she says. "Lookism ties self-worth to an unrealistic set of standards and appearances in our society. Standards shaped by power, privilege, opportunity and access rather than merit."[6]
- To combat this, Tenzer says we should "Shift cultural norms away from commenting on appearance and more toward valuing intelligence, character, success and integrity."[7]
- Of course, it's totally normal to care about your appearance to some degree—the point is to recognize that it's not the most important thing about you, and it's not where your self-worth comes from.
