PlayStation will no longer be partnering with Kojima Productions on the upcoming action-espionage game Physint, with Xbox now set to take over publishing duties for the game.

The bombshell announcement was first made by PlayStation on X, where the company revealed that it had “made the difficult decision to step away” from collaborating with Hideo Kojima’s studio on the game. The statement reiterated that PlayStation’s relationship with Kojima remained strong, and promised “continued close collaboration” in the future.

In a statement published by Xbox shortly after, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said that the company would be publishing Physint going forward.

“Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life,” Sharma’s statement reads. “We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen XBOX to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at XBOX.”

Sharma also claimed that the relationship between Xbox and Kojima Productions would extend beyond just video games, with the two companies also partnering “across film and television to bring new stories to broader audiences.”

Hideo Kojima also posted on X, revealing that PlayStation Studios “unexpectedly” canceled Physint in mid-June:

As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project. PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner. In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in XBOX a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward.

Physint will be the second Kojima game that’s being worked on with Xbox, joining OD, an upcoming horror game co-written by Jordan Peele and featuring Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier.

What is Physint?

Physint, a portmanteau of “physical” and “intelligence” is an upcoming action espionage game and multimedia project from Hideo Kojima and his studio Kojima Productions. The game was first announced at a PlayStation State of Play presentation in 2024, with PlayStation Studios announced to be publishing the game at the time.

Development for the game started in earnest following the release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach in 2025, with casting and performance capture sessions set to start later this year. Not much else is known about the project outside of brief teasers and vague posts from Kojima on social media.

No release date has been set for Physint.
