In a global cataclysm, "The Sudden Departure," 140 million people disappeared without a trace. Three years later, residents of Mapleton, N.Y., try to maintain equilibrium when the notion of "normal" no longer applies. Intense grief has divided families and turned faith to cynicism, paranoia and madness, leading some of the traumatized to join the Guilty Remnant, a cultlike group. Kevin Garvey, a beleaguered police chief, must keep peace between townspeople and the cult, a task made tougher with concern about his kids. His daughter alternates between apathy and rebellion, and his wayward son befriends a charismatic prophet. "The Leftovers" is based on the best-seller by Tom Perrotta, who is one of the series' executive producers.

"The Leftovers" recognizes that catharsis often comes with a side helping of comedy - or, if not comedy, a wry realization that life is often painful, strange and ridiculous all at once. Go to Full Review Emily Nussbaum The New Yorker Nov 28, 2018
With its mystery that will never be solved, "The Leftovers" occasionally has a quality of repetition compulsion, as if Lindelof were working out old traumas in fresh forms...But, if so, it's a therapeutic project that lends the show a certain wildness. There's such authoritativeness in the storytelling here that even settings and characters that have just been introduced feel fully realized, recognizable, and worthy of our investment. Go to Full Review Alan French AwardsCircuit.com Oct 10, 2018

If the show continues to delve into these characters, get ready for an emotional roller coaster. Go to Full Review Oliver Whitney ScreenCrush Jun 18, 2018
For now, we can take a break from the violence and melancholia of Season 1 and start to understand the trauma within the world of The Leftovers through a more multifaceted spectrum of emotions. Go to Full Review Hannah Dunleavy Den of Geek Jun 12, 2018

Colin M @RT37398633 Sep 30, 2026 Didn’t think it could possibly be better than season 1 but holy **** was I wrong. On the absolute BEST build up and climaxes I’ve ever watched on TV, Emotional turmoil and all. See more Jazzmin H @jazzminbree Apr 28, 2026 Season 2 was great. Towing off from Season 1's character, introducing a new space and new characters within this world and somehow intertwining the previous storylines, they did a fantastic job. It was exciting and thrilling and truly left you guessing on what's going on (but not like the way Season 1 was where you're trying to figure out the characters or groups). Twist and turns where you like a character, then you don't, and vice versa. All the episodes left me wanting more besides one which was outlandish but I suppose it was a creative way to interpret "crossing over." Still dealt with questions, trauma, and pain of faith, religion, and cults which is the reason I started watching it in the first place. I'd watch this season over again! See more Helen C @RT33885286 Apr 11, 2025 The Leftovers – Criminally Underrated Rewatching The Leftovers years later, it feels more relevant than ever. The writing is outstanding, raw, and deeply human. Justin Theroux’s performance is next level—so much emotion with so few words. It’s a tough role and he nails it. This show deserves to be rediscovered and readvertised An underrated masterpiece that needs to be watched - or re-watched especially now See more Zach B @RT34500026 Jan 17, 2025 Season 2 is a must watch. A got goosebumps twice, that is rare for me. The absolute best acting I’ve ever seen. See more Benjamin H @RT54005248 Sep 26, 2024 Although it is sometimes inconsistent (mostly deriving from episodes 3 & 9), Season 2 of the Leftovers continues to be compelling and smartly written television that both builds and improves on season 1 while further exploring on its themes and featuring a great new setting. When it comes to emotional power, performances and tone, everything is in peak condition. I also think things was better constructed and had a much better flow to it (except for a lot of stuff in episodes 3 & 9), while also delivering a bunch of superb character development (talking here about Kevin, Nora, Matt and John Murphy in particular). See more Frank H @RT75619985 Mar 23, 2024 THE most ambitious show of our generation. So many shows try to be "deep" by just being cynical. This show, however is truly a product of a visionary.
