Was it fate, or free will that shaped where we stand today? See more noah M @RT34675613 Sep 6, 2026 City of God is a Brazilian gangster movie about the slums of Rio that revolves around the rise of drug trafficking and gang violence in the area from the sixties to the eighties. The film tells the story of a young photographer who becomes a witness and participant in the events that take place. It follows multiple characters’ paths, all of which are intertwined, and exposes the brutal nature of such conflicts. Full of energy, the movie provides an experience that is both shocking and horrifying. This is a real story told through the lens of the main characters, with the viewer being drawn into it by the skilled directorial work, magnificent music, and amazing acting of the child actors. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in good movies in general and Brazilian cinema in particular. It is a must-see for sure. However, the hubby hadn’t ever seen it, and revisiting it two-plus decades later, the impact wasn’t diminished at all. Fernando Meirelles’ visceral portrait of two boys growing up in Rio’s Cidade de Deus favela, their lives diverging into radically different fates, remains one of cinema’s great gut-punches. The constant rat-a-tat-tat of gunfire, the sun-scorched grime, the extraordinary performances from a cast of mostly non-professional actors, it all drops you squarely into a world most of us will never know and probably not fully recover from seeing. That it still shocks and dismays while leaving a sliver of hope is the mark of genuinely great filmmaking. If you haven’t seen it, stop what you’re doing and add this to your queue.
