Apple's fifth-generation AirPods, announced Wednesday, come in two different versions, and the more advanced option is $20 cheaper than the equivalent AirPods 4 model. The cheapest option is $129, while a more advanced pair cost $149. Both versions are up for preorder later today, ahead of a Sept. 18 launch.
Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is now available across both standard AirPods models, and it's better than on the AirPods 4. Apple claims each offers up to 50% more noise reduction than its predecessor, calling it the "best ANC on the market" for an open-ear design.
A new Adaptive Audio feature lets the headphones change ANC settings depending on what's happening around you. "Providing the best of both worlds, Adaptive Audio dynamically blends Transparency mode and ANC based on the conditions of a user’s environment," Apple says.
Both models feature a redesign of the earbuds' internals, which Apple says includes a new multi-port acoustic architecture and its next-generation adaptive equalizer to deliver better audio than previous models. "This makes Personalized Spatial Audio more immersive and dynamic, so the user feels like they’re surrounded by whatever they are listening to," Apple says.
How do the two models differ? The design is largely similar, but the more expensive option comes with enhanced controls built into the earbud's stem, similar to those on AirPods Pro. There's also an extra hour of battery life on the more expensive model, plus a wireless-charging-compatible case.
The basic AirPods 5 feature four hours of listening time and 20 hours with their paired case. The more expensive option comes with five hours of listening and 22 hours with the wireless charging case.
The earbuds also come with new tied-in features that pair with other Apple services, such as access to the upgraded AI-powered Siri in iOS 27 and Live Translation on iPhone.
Apple's event today also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable iPhone Duo. Apple didn't announce the long-rumored redesigned AirPods Pro, which are now expected to land next year. Rumors suggest Apple may include built-in cameras to monitor your surroundings for AI-powered features.
